The Eagles today agreed to terms with running back LeSean McCoy on a five-year contract extension that runs through 2017.

McCoy set franchise records in 2011 with 17 rushing touchdowns, and 20 total scores, while earning All Pro and Pro Bowl honors. He also led the NFL with 102 first downs and 48 runs of 10-plus yards, while finishing as the league’s fourth-leading rusher with 1,309 yards.

In 2010, McCoy ranked fourth in the NFL with 1,672 yards from scrimmage while leading all running backs with a career-high 78 catches.

Philadelphia had a disappointing 4-8 start last season, before rallying with four straight wins to end the year. The Eagles did not make the playoffs.

“We are excited to continue this offseason of taking care of our own players,” coach Andy Reid said. “LeSean is one of the most electrifying running backs in the National Football League. He can do it all — run, catch, block and score touchdowns from anywhere on the field.”

McCoy, a native of Harrisburg, was drafted in the 2009 second round out of the University of Pittsburgh. He has played in 46 games, with 32 starts, and has registered 4,241 yards from scrimmage.

“He’s worked extremely hard to turn himself into a Pro Bowl running back,” Reid said, “and he is well deserving of this contract extension.”

That’s all for today.

The buzz about Donovan McNabb appearing once more in a Philadelphia Eagles uniform just won’t go away. Recent comments from both McNabb and Andy Reid have led to some fans wondering if the solution to the backup quarterback question could be the guy that led the Eagles to five straight NFC title games. Reid said that he believes that McNabb can still play, and that he would recommend him to any team. Meanwhile, McNabb is actively auditioning for a job in 2012. He didn’t mention the Eagles specifically, but did say that he could play with any of the 32 teams. As an Eagles fan, I can’t see McNabb returning to Philadelphia. However, I still get annoyed by the talk.

McNabb is starting to remind me of Terrell Owens, his former teammate and rival with the Eagles. While Owens might have all sorts of issues outside of football, their careers have become remarkably similar. Both players have now played their way out of multiple jobs since leaving the Eagles. Both can’t seem to let go of their careers. In 2011, it was Owens staging an elaborate workout to try and win teams over. This time, it is McNabb. In my opinion these two currently rank among the most annoying and self-obsessed players that I have seen in a long time. I don’t want the Eagles getting involved in any of that.

I’m not crazy about the backup quarterbacks that the Eagles currently have, and that is a real concern. We know that Michael Vick is a risk when it comes to playing all 16 games. But after considering everything, I would prefer any of them to McNabb. All things considered, McNabb just isn’t worth the baggage. Maybe he can still play a little, but there are reasons that he flamed out with his last two teams. There are also reasons that no team picked him up after the Minnesota Vikings released him in 2011. When it comes to McNabb, there are too many red flags.

While I have my issues with McNabb as a player, I still don’t want to see his career end on such a bitter note. Like the one with Owens, the situation is starting to get a little sad. I don’t know why he can’t just recognize that his time is done. If McNabb came back to Philadelphia in a backup role, there would be nothing to gain. He wouldn’t be happy in that capacity and there is little he can do to help the team. Meanwhile, his image with the fans will fall even further.

With rookie camp in the books and OTAs set to begin on May 22, most of the focus for the Philadelphia Eagles has shifted to the contract status of running back LeSean McCoy. The star back is entering the fourth and final year of his rookie deal. He is due to make less than a million dollars in 2012, a salary that is far below what most people think he deserves. There are many people that would love to see the team lock McCoy up with a new deal sooner rather than later. As a fan, I am among that group but I’m not overly concerned about him holding out in 2012.

The situation with McCoy is especially troubling for Eagles fans because of what happened in 2011. DeSean Jackson was in a similar situation before the season began. The Eagles did not re-sign him until after the disappointing campaign, and that led to a lot of issues during the regular season. While McCoy is not the same type of personality as Jackson, Philadelphia fans will always fear drama in situations like this. Jackson held out during the brief training camp in 2011, and no one wants to see McCoy do the same. I don’t think he will.

McCoy has stayed actively involved with the team since the season ended. He is expected to take part in OTAs, something that you don’t typically see from a player that is planning to hold out. I take that as a sign that he is more focused on helping the team than he is on a contract. Of course, McCoy wants to get paid and you can’t fault him for that. I just don’t see that being an issue because I think the Eagles will get a deal done with him before the season begins.

I understand why Philadelphia is hesitant. After all, no position has a shorter shelf life than a running back. However, the Eagles recognize how young McCoy is and that he has several good years left. They also know that he is arguably the biggest offensive threat in the NFL right now. Even if the team only gets a few good years out of him, the investment would be worth it. On top of that, McCoy has shown nothing but maturity through everything. This is a guy that has leadership written all over him. I expect the Eagles to reward that. For that reason, I’m not going to worry about the McCoy situation until there is a good reason to worry. Right now, I don’t see any.

Any hopes that the Philadelphia Eagles had of getting Jason Peters back in 2012 is likely over. The star offensive lineman re-injured his Achilles. The injury took place as he was using a Roll-A-Bout machine, a device used to help him move around. The additional rupture almost certainly erases any chance that Peters will return in 2012. As a fan, I hope the Eagles don’t try to rush Peters back. I would rather have him healthy in 2013 than to try and force him back early in 2012.

The Eagles haven’t confirmed anything about Peters and his status for 2012. All that we have been told is that he will be out indefinitely. There is no need to define it any further at this point since the Eagles don’t need to place him on the injured reserve list yet. However, I would expect that move at some point during training camp. It was a long shot for Peters to return after the first injury. Now that his recovery time has been reset, the idea of him coming back in the next six months is almost ridiculous. The Eagles shouldn’t even take a chance.

Philadelphia prepared to play without Peters as soon as he was injured. In my opinion, they should stick to that plan. Even though they were optimistic about the possibility of him playing, they had to be preparing for a full year without him. This should make things a little easier. Demetress Bell is a capable replacement and he should help the Eagles succeed without Peters. That means there is no reason to try and bring him back this season. The Eagles should just let him rest for the next year and hope that he is ready for team activities in 2013.

I love Peters as a player and I think he will make a full recovery. If the team and the player handle things correctly, he should be ready to go in 2013. The fact that he ruptured his Achilles a second time is enough of a reason for me to think that he needs a year to recover. I’m sure the Eagles know that, so fans should accept it. Peters isn’t coming back this year, and that’s probably for the best.

Vinny Iyer
Sporting News

Philadelphia Eagles running back LeSean McCoy’s contract will leave him underpaid in 2012 and possibly a free agent in 2013. The team is making its best effort to change.

Eagles officials are working toward giving McCoy a desired long-term contract update, coach Andy Reid told Philadelphia radio station 97.5 The Fanatic.

“He and I talked. I can’t share (all of) that with everybody, but I will tell you it is heading in the right direction,” Reid said, per SportsRadioInterviews.com. “That’s all I can tell you.”

McCoy is scheduled to be paid $615,000 in base salary for 2012, the final year of the rookie contract he signed in June 2009. In 15 games last season, he led the league in rushing touchdowns with 17 and finished fourth in rushing yards with 1,309.

Reid said the Eagles are committed to showing McCoy just how valuable he is to their offense.

“He knows we appreciate him, and we are working through those negotiations and I think good things will happen,” Reid said.

Just how much should McCoy be paid? Jacksonville Jaguars feature back Maurice Jones-Drew, the 2011 NFL rushing leader, will be paid $4.45 million in 2012.

On the highest end of the spectrum, Chris Johnson of the Tennessee Titans and the Minnesota Vikings’ Adrian Peterson are due $8 million for the upcoming season. In March, Arian Foster signed a five-year, $43.5 million deal with the Houston Texans.

Two talented franchise-tagged backs, the Baltimore Ravens’ Ray Rice and Chicago Bears’ Matt Forte, will be watching closely to see what McCoy gets.

Considering the Eagles recently invested $45 million over five years in wide receiver DeSean Jackson and that McCoy has been a more reliable speedy playmaker, McCoy can expect to be well paid — and soon.

(AP)Now that the 2012 NFL draft is in the can, it’s time to take the Shutdown 50 scouting format forward and get a closer look at some of the surprising and fascinating selections from this year’s draft — the guys we missed in the original 50, but who could be impact players now or down the road. The latest entry: Brandon Boykin, the Georgia cornerback selected by the Philadelphia Eagles with the 28th pick in the fourth round (123rd overall).

Overview: Just before the draft, the Eagles traded disgruntled cornerback Asante Samuel to the Falcons for a seventh round pick. Samuel made the Pro Bowl three times in four years with the Eagles, but many fans were happy to see him go. Philadelphia Daily News columnist Marcus Hayes called Samuel “a fraud, wrapped in a mirage, inside an illusion,” in a hyperbolic preach-to-the-base post-trade column that reflected the ultimate Philly bias: if you don’t hit like a freight train, then you stink. And Samuel, for all his coverage skills, hit like a baby wipe.

Boykin will not replace Samuel in the starting lineup — that will be Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie’s job — but he will get first dibs on the slot corner role. And Boykin, for all his athleticism, cannot tackle. Somebody get Marcus Hayes a scented candle.

Boykin played cornerback, returned kicks, and had a small role in the Georgia offense. According to the team website, he majored in magazines. Magazines? Writing for them? Selling them? Cutting pictures of celebrities from them? Or maybe he majored in ammunition supply shacks. Whatever he learned in college, Boykin must become a more reliable tackler to earn a Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval.

Strengths: Boykin can fly. He has recovery speed in the open field and can track the deep ball. He often runs down screens from behind and can make the touchdown-saving stop.

Boykin has three years of starting experience and is very aware in zone coverage. He frequently played “off” at Georgia and was good at reading and reacting to plays in front of him. He also moved to the slot at times and demonstrated quick reactions in underneath zones. He has potential as a route-jumper.

Boykin will be able to contribute in the return game and will be very dangerous with an interception in his hands.

Weaknesses: Oh, the tackling. Boykin lunges at the ankles of ballcarriers in the open field. His angles are bad. He gets wired to blocks. He is soft and tentative in run support. He can drag down receivers after the catch, but that is about it. He is small, and he plays small. His tackling issues may make it hard for him to contribute on special teams.

Boykin had some concentration drops on interceptions. Suspect hands and decision making may keep him from becoming an elite punt returner.

Conclusion: Boykin fits the mold of a classic slot cornerback and return man. Let him sit in short zones, and he will cherry-pick some interceptions and use his quickness to break up passes that looked like easy completions. As a standard starting cornerback, he will be stretched but not awful: his catch-up speed can prevent catastrophes, though there would surely be some “whoops” tackling moments.

The Eagles demonstrated a complete inability to use talents like Boykin properly last year: they put raw rookies on the field with minimal training camp experience. Boykin should have the chance to grow into a third or fourth cornerback gradually this year. He may eventually grow into something more if his tackling improves. It may be a good thing that Samuel is no longer there to mentor him, though the Eagles have other blazingly fast softies in their cornerback pipeline.

NFL Comparison: Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Eagles

Beyond the Shutdown 50:
Bruce Irvin, OLB/DE, Seattle Seahawks | Brock Osweiler, QB, Denver Broncos | Kevin Zeitler, OG, Cincinnati Bengals | Brandon Weeden, QB, Cleveland Browns

Former Philadelphia Eagles center Jamaal Jackson has announced his retirement. After a brief tryout with the New York Giants, the veteran player informed his new coach that his heart wasn’t in football anymore. That means that a surprising career came to a quick end. The timing of Jackson’s announcement is interesting. He should serve an inspiration to the many late picks and undrafted free agents that the Eagles have in minicamp. As a fan, I always respected Jackson and hope that his career is properly appreciated by those in Philadelphia.

The Eagles signed Jackson as an undrafted free agent in 2003. He came from Delaware State, making him somewhat of a local player on the Eagles. Of course, no one expected much out of him. Jackson ended up proving everyone wrong. After spending the first two seasons either injured or on the practice squad, Jackson emerged as the starting center in 2005. Once he took over, he had a grip on the job. He started every game but one between 2006 and 2009. Unfortunately, an injury in the 2010 season opener ended his season. In 2011, the Eagles went with Jason Kelce as the starting center. That was essentially the beginning of the end for Jackson as a member of the team.

So what was so special about Jackson? He’s not a Hall of Famer and he’s not going to have his number retired. Most fans will simply file him along with the majority of other ex-Philadelphia players. However, I look at him as an example of what all Philadelphia athletes should be like. He worked hard to build a successful career that no one saw coming. He kept his mouth shut and never complained. He was a solid player that provided a steady force on the offensive line for years. All of the undrafted free agents and late picks currently in minicamp should all aim to be as successful as Jackson was. This is the kind of player that might have a bright future in coaching one day. There won’t be any ceremony to mark his retirement, but fans should always appreciate the way he played the game.

There is more than one way to say “Welcome to the NFL,” Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Juan Castillo’s version just has a bit more spice.

Castillo “welcomed” the Eagles’ first-round draft pick defensive tackle Fletcher Cox with a profanity-filled tirade at the team’s rookie minicamp Saturday after signaling a play dead.

“I don’t know what I did,” Cox told the Philadelphia Inquirer. “But I said, ‘Yes, sir,’ gave him no lip back, and I just kept going.”

Coach Andy Reid expects Cox to boost the Eagles’ pass rush and address the increasingly dominate NFL passing offenses.

Defensive line coach Jim Washburn also got in on the action, coaching up Cox for not hustling during a drill.

“I know that’s one thing Coach Washburn is going to do,” Cox said. “He’s going to get after me, and that keeps me motivated.”

The Eagles traded up from the No. 15 pick to No. 12 to draft Cox last month.

Gotta run!.

The Challenges (No Internet Use before Answering!)

 1) Two Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks were the first (data since 1960) to rush for at least 75 yards and throw for at least 125 yards in their first NFL starts. Name the QBs, and give the years (plus or minus two) in which these feats were accomplished. (Four possible points.)

 2) The Eagles have never won a Super Bowl, and yet hold an odd record regarding NFL championship wins. Give that record; give the teams they defeated, the years of their wins, and for “extra credit” give those championship game scores. (Seven possible points; at least four are total giveaways.)

 3) Name the first Eagle inducted into The Pro Football Hall of Fame, and give that player’s most impressive statistic. (Two possible points.)

 4) Active players: who has more receptions – TE Brent Celek (five-year career) or WR DeSean Jackson (four-year career)? Give their total receptions (plus or minus three). Which player has scored more touchdowns? Give those numbers. (Six possible points.)

 5) Active players: LeSean “Shady” McCoy is about to negotiate a new contract with the Eagles. Last season he rushed for career-high 1309 yards; where would 1309 yards rank among the rushing seasons posted by former Eagles backfield star Brian Westbrook (first? fifth? ninth? etc.)?

 The Answers

 1) The first QB to accomplish this dual threat record was Jack Concannon in 1964; the second was Randall Cunningham in 1985.

 2) The Eagles are the only NFL team to post back-to-back NFL championship shutout wins, defeating the Chicago Cardinals and Los Angeles Rams in 1948 and 1949, respectively, by scores of 7-0 and 14-0.

 3) The first Eagle to get a bust in Canton’s shrine was Bert Bell in 1963. The matter of Bell’s statistics is arguably a trick question since he was basically elected to the Hall of Fame as a “League Administrator” (Commissioner, 1946-59) and “Owner” (the Eagles and the Pittsburgh Steelers). As a coach of the Eagles (1936-41), he lead teams that posted a woeful 10-46-2 record. As commissioner, he brought three All-America Football Conference teams, the Cleveland Browns, Baltimore Colts, and San Francisco 49ers, into the NFL. As a player, Bell quarterbacked Penn into the Rose Bowl in 1916. Either that fact or the morbid fact that Bell died of a heart attack while watching “his” two teams, the Eagles and Steelers, play at Franklin Field on Penn’s campus (October 11, 1959) would gain you the second point for number three.

 4) The answers in order: Jackson; De Sean leads Brent in receptions, 230-223; Jackson; he leads the big TE in TDs, 28 (21 catches, 3 rushes, 4 kick returns) to 19 (all receptions).

 5) McCoy’s third year rushing total would have ranked second only to Westbrook’s sixth-year total of 1333 in 2007.

The author, a long-time Eagles fan, thinks they should give Shady McCoy the big bucks.

Thanks for reading! .
