Eagles owner talks about process of signing troubled players

Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie isn’t afraid to take a chance on a reclamation project, as proven by the franchise star he now has behind center.

But Lurie made it clear the signing of Michael Vick following the quarterback’s 18-month prison stint came only after a long look at both physical skills and personality makeup.

“We’ve shown we’ll take chances if it’s warranted,” Lurie told the Philadelphia Inquirer on Wednesday.

Which, of course, begs the question: Are the Eagles interested in signing soon-to-be free agent Plaxico Burress?

The former Giants star was released from prison on Monday after a 22-month term stemming from a weapons conviction. Burress exited prison wearing a throwback Philadelphia Phillies cap, a not-so-subtle nod to one of his potential landings spots.

Burress would appear to be a good fit with the Eagles, but Lurie said properly judging a player goes beyond game tape and bio information.

“You can evaluate his talent. You can evaluate his age. But you can’t evaluate where his heart and his head are at the moment,” Lurie said. “Until you can do that … it’s far from enough information.”

That was the case when the team began its flirtation with Vick that led to their signing of the quarterback in 2009.

“We evaluate case by case. It involved a lot of research into Michael — what kind of teammate he was,” Lurie said. “What his motivations were. How much he cared for the game.”

As for Burress’ recent choices in headwear, Eagles coach Andy Reid isn’t one to make much of it.

“He must be a Phillies fan,” he told the Inquirer. “If he’d had an Eagles hat on, then we’d talk.”

Gotta run!.

Sounds Like Plaxico Burress, Eagles Have Mutual Interest

Read More: Michael Vick (QB – PHI), Plaxico Burress (WR – NYG), Philadelphia Eagles

When looking at where former New York Giants WR Plaxico Burress will land following his release from prison, the Philadelphia Eagles have continually come up as an option. One of the very few dissenters in Burress-to-the-Eagles was Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirier.

The good news is for Eagles fans who want Burress is that McLane has flipped the script. He’s now saying there’s interest there from the Eagles side.

Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie had a chance to decline the team’s interest in Burress but declined, instead suggesting that, if the Eagles were to sign Burress, they would go through a similar evaluation as they did with QB Michael Vick, who was also exiting prison when Philly signed him. Via Philly.com:

“We evaluate case by case. It involved a lot of research into Michael – what kind of teammate he was. What his motivations were. How much he cared for the game,” Lurie said. “We’ve shown we’ll take chances if it’s warranted.”

So Burress to Philly isn’t so crazy after all, despite what the AP says. The only thing we need now is to end the lockout so some team can actually make a move on him.

Eagles QB Vick Offers Plaxico Advice

Michael Vick has been down a similar road that awaits Plaxico Burress. The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback’s advice is for Burress to put his family before football. Vick, who made comeback to the NFL following an 18-month stint in prison on dogfighting charges, said he hasn’t talked with Burress, but offered some guidance Wednesday. “Just take your time coming back and getting acclimated. Think family first and football second and it’ll all work out,” Vick said. “It’s great that he’ll get a second chance. We’ll pray for him, we’re going to support him 100 percent and we’re in his corner and we just want him to excel.” Burress was released from prison Monday after spending nearly two years locked up for a gun charge. Philadelphia has been rumored to be the top landing spot for Burress’ services. Eagles coach Andy Reid downplayed the notion Wednesday, without ruling it out completely.

That’s all the news for today.

Sarah Martinez-Helfman, executive director of the Eagles Youth Partnership, says the excitement has been high for seven months.

“But I tell you what — the special thing is if you were here tomorrow morning, when the kids start coming back and say, gasp, I thought it was a dream!  They really see that their world has changed.  It’s spectacular.”

It’s the first Eagles Build for defensive line coach Jim Washburn.

“I grew up in an orphanage for part of my life,” he said, “and this is really cool.  This is really neat to take kids and a school like this and to do all this.  It’s really a privilege to do it.”

Eagles players were not on hand this year due to the NFL lockout.
