Philadelphia Eagles Schedule to Be Released on…

Philadelphia Eagles fans will finally get to see what the schedule looks like for the 2012 season. The NFL will reveal the regular season schedule on Tuesday, April 17 at 7:00 p.m. EST. This is always an exciting day for NFL fans because it makes the new season feel a little closer. While we know the opponents for the Eagles, we don’t know when those games will take place. Here are some questions about the 2012 schedule that I can’t wait to have answered.

Who will be the first opponent?

The season opener is always a huge event. I can’t wait to see who the opponent will be in the first week of the season. Since 2007, the Eagles have opened the season against the St. Louis Rams and Green Bay Packers twice each. That won’t happen since neither team will face the Eagles this season. Since we know the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants are playing each other in Week 1, there is little chance that the team will face a division opponent in the season opener. They opened the 2009 season against the Carolina Panthers and could do the same in 2012. That would create a pretty bizarre pattern for season openers.

When will the division games take place?

I am really hoping to see the Eagles visit the Cowboys on Thanksgiving. Beyond that, all we know is that they will face a division opponent in Week 17. It’s anyone’s guess as to where the other games will fall. I want to see who the first division opponents is and I want to see which teams they play on the road before playing at home. I would love to see the Cowboys or Giants visit Lincoln Financial Field in December.

When will the bye week take place?

I am a big fan of having the bye week fall between Week 7 and Week 9. Of course, that might not happen this season. The bye week can play a major role in the fortunes of a team. I hope that it comes at a time that allows the Eagles to be strategic about it. Of course, I also want to see who the Eagles play immediately following the bye week. Andy Reid has never lost a game following a bye. Will the NFL schedulers try and test that by giving them one of their tougher games? I wouldn’t be surprised to see that.

What are the prime time games?

We can assume that at least one game against the Giants or Cowboys will appear in prime time. Despite an 8-8 finish, the Eagles are probably going to get at least three prime time slots for the season. Two of those would probably be divisional games. The Eagles also face playoff teams in the Pittsburgh Steelers, Baltimore Ravens, New Orleans Saints, Cincinnati Bengals, Detroit Lions, and Atlanta Falcons. I can see the Ravens, Steelers, or Saints appearing as prime time opponents for the Eagles.

Philadelphia Eagles will receive Iba…

Philadelphia Eagles will receive Iba…

The Rotary Club is expected to announce Wednesday that the Philadelphia Eagles will be presented a special President’s Award during the 19th annual Iba Awards, scheduled for June 18 at the Renaissance Hotel.

“This is a big honor for the Eagles and our fans,” said Sarah Martinez-Helfman, who will come to Tulsa to accept the award on behalf of the NFL franchise.

“For the Rotary Club of Tulsa to reach across the country and recognize us here in Philadelphia is really humbling, and we truly appreciate it. The Eagles believe that when we take the passion our fans have for football and transfer it to addressing important social causes, we can all make a difference.”

Martinez-Helfman is the executive director of the Eagles Youth Partnership, a community outreach program that serves more than 50,000 low-income children in the greater Philadelphia region every year with a focus on health and education programs.

EYP was founded in 1995. A long-standing commitment to social causes – including Go Green and Tackling Breast Cancer endeavors – led to the Eagles earning a Sports Team of the Year award from Beyond Sport in 2011. Beyond Sport is a global organization that promotes, develops and supports the use of sports to create positive social change across the world.

The Rotary Club of Tulsa will present a President’s Award for the third time. Previous recipients were former UCLA coach John Wooden in 2004 and speed skater Joey Cheek in 2007. The award was created to honor individuals – and now teams – who promote and advance the qualities of leadership, education and compassion and who inspire others to do likewise.

Through EYP, the Eagles offer services to kids at school and neighborhood levels. Signature programs – the Eagles Eye Mobile and the Eagles Book Mobile – capitalize on the Eagles’ popularity to gain the attention of hard-to-reach children. EYP also is responsible for an annual playground build and partners with other nonprofit organizations for a variety of youth programs.

“Eagles Youth Partnership helps define the cutting edge in the emerging field of national sports philanthropy,” Greg Johnson, founder and executive director of The Sports Philanthropy Project, is quoted as saying on EYP’s website.

“Nowhere have I witnessed more compelling examples of the strategic use of a professional sports team’s assets than in the direct programming offered by EYP.”

The Eagles will be doubly honored at the Iba Awards. Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha is the 2012 male recipient. Two-time Olympic softball medalist Jessica Mendoza is the female recipient.

The Iba Awards are named in memory of former Oklahoma State and U.S. Olympic basketball coach Henry Iba. They are given to athletes who excel in their sport and who display, by their actions, a desire to help others.

Philadelphia Eagles face an uncertain offseason…

The Eagles struggled early and never recovered. A four-game winning streak at the end came too late and they finished 8-8, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2007 and just the fourth time in coach Andy Reid’s 13 seasons.

“It’s going to motivate us to work harder,” quarterback Michael Vick said Monday. “It’s very disappointing.”

After an offseason spending spree brought several accomplished players to Philadelphia and added to a roster that already featured Vick, LeSean McCoy and DeSean Jackson, the Eagles were the talk of the NFL. They were defending NFC East champions and seemingly on the rise.

So when Young compared his new teammates to the Miami Heat, some people scoffed but most expected the Eagles to make a serious run at the first championship since 1960. Even team president Joe Banner declared the Eagles “all-in” and called this a Super Bowl-or-bust year.

But the team quickly imploded.

“There were definitely red flags,” said defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins, who won the Super Bowl with Green Bay last season. “A lot of people see Super Bowl, or I think they let the fact that the Super Bowl is there, and so many people talk about it right away. You can hear people nowadays, they come out of the draft talking about Super Bowl and I think it kind of gets thrown around too loosely now.

“It’s obviously the ultimate goal in where you want to get to, but you have to understand that you have to work hard. It’s something that is a process and you have to take it each step at a time to get to it and I think a lot of time people just want to jump from preseason to the Super Bowl without doing what it takes in between.”

Various factors contributed to a four-game losing streak that dropped the Eagles to 1-4 and doomed them from the beginning. Vick couldn’t finish two games in September because of injuries, the offense made critical turnovers and the defense struggled mightily as new players tried to adjust to new defensive coordinator Juan Castillo’s system.

Finishing games was a problem, too. The Eagles lost five games in which they led in the fourth quarter. One play could’ve made the difference in a season where the division was mediocre. The Eagles weren’t eliminated from playoff contention until right before their next-to-last game kicked off and they ended up second behind the New York Giants (9-7).

“It will be tough to sit at home and watch the playoffs, but we have to maintain a positive outlook about what we could be and go into the offseason knowing that we can play with the best teams in the league,” wide receiver Jeremy Maclin said. “Philly is not used to not being in the playoffs. I think guys will be hungry. This offseason will be very critical for us and I think it will be good.”

It’s uncertain whether the team will make major changes. Reid was criticized heavily this season and many fans want him gone. They chanted “Fire Andy!” during a loss to New England. Reid refused to discuss his future after Sunday’s game and wasn’t available to reporters on Monday. He’s expected to return, but his coaching staff may look different.

Not much at stake as Philadelphia Eagles host…

The only especially interesting question surrounding the
Philadelphia Eagles’ season finale 1 o’clock this afternoon at Lincoln Financial
Field against the Washington Redskins is: how many fans will show up?

The outcome of the game makes no difference in the NFL playoff picture. A
New Year’s Day game faces a lot of competition for attention (hello
Mummers).

And Eagles fans voted with their feet during the last Linc
disaster when less than 10,000 remained in the stadium during the fourth
quarter of the loss to the New England Patriots in November. At least the weather’s supposed to be nice — 55 and sunny.

What the fans who do show up will see is a Redskins team in its usual place in the NFC East — last for the fourth straight season — and one of the few NFL teams with more issues than the Eagles. Substance abuse suspensions, a quarterback (Rex Grossman) who leads the
NFL in interceptions, all kinds of injuries and a Super Bowl-winning
coach in Mike Shanahan who seems to have left his bag of magic tricks in
Denver add up to another fine mess megabucks Redskin owner Daniel Snyder has gotten himself into again.

Shanahan himself admits Washington has taken a lot longer to turn around than he thought.

“A lot longer than I first anticipated,” Shanahan said. “We had less
depth than I thought. We were a little bit older at a few different
positions. I thought we might keep those players a little longer than we
did.”

The Eagles probably thought their season would be lasting a little
longer. Their three-game December win streak came too late to salvage a
playoff spot and any accomplishments that will come today are for
individuals alone.

LeSean McCoy has an outside shot at the NFL rushing crown. He has 1,309
yards coming into the game, trailing Jacksonville’s Maurice Jones-Drew
by 128 yards (that each conference’s leading rusher will miss the
playoffs gives a pause when thinking of how critical running games are).

It may be more realistic for McCoy to break the all-time Eagles
single-season record of 1,512 yards set by Wilbert Montgomery in 1979.

“Yeah, it’s on my mind,” said McCoy, who leads the NFL in touchdowns
(20) and rushing TDs (17). “Hopefully, I can get it. A lot of things have
to go right for me to get it but I’m going to go out and play my heart
out. I’m sure my linemen are going to do the same thing. But the main
thing is winning and kind of go out on a good note. And it would just be
even sweeter to get the record though.”

Sweet for his linemen too, perhaps.

“Yeah, he can take us to McDonald’s or something,” said guard Evan Mathis with a laugh.

Eagles’ defensive end Jason Babin, with 18 sacks, trails Minnesota’s
Jared Allen for the NFL lead by half a sack and, with a huge day, could
pass Michael Strahan’s NFL record of 22.5 in one season.

Other than such records, there’s not much at stake. The Eagles make a
big deal about finishing .500 and going 5-1 in the NFC East and while
some dismiss such talk, defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins, who won the
Super Bowl with Green Bay last season, disagrees.

“Oh yeah, it’s something that’s huge,” he said. “Even if you look at
Green Bay, what we did at the end of the season last year and that
carried over with them into this year and that’s happened to us a
couple times out there when I was there. So I think it’s something that,
especially for the young guys or the people coming in, is that you kind
of get a taste of that winning like, ‘Man, we won four games straight,
we can do this.’ So then for all of the young guys, their approach for
next year will be wanting to go through that again, they don’t want to go through the losing part, and then they know that we have the ability to do that.”

Eagles fans might wonder why it took until December to find that
ability. Quarterback Michael Vick said the team was frustrated, too.

“We’re all going through it together,” he said. “We want to win just as
bad as they do and, you know, certain things just didn’t happen the way
that we wanted them to and this is where the chips fell. So, hopefully,
we’re all disappointed and wish that the outcome could have been
different but we apologize and, hopefully, we can give them want they want
very soon.”

A win today would be a small first step, for however many show up at the Linc.

There is the quick update of the day.

What We Learned from Week 15 in the NFL: Fan’s…

Week 15 in the NFL showed us quite a bit. The San Diego Chargers and Philadelphia Eagles aren’t completely dead while two big streaks ended. Here is what we learned from week 15 in the NFL.

We’re going streaking - With that thought of Will Ferrell streaking through the quad and into the gymnasium fresh in your head, two big streaks ended Sunday. The Indianapolis Colts finally got their first win without Peyton Manning as they defeated the Tennessee Titans while the Kansas City Chiefs upset the Green Bay Packers, handing them their first loss in recent memory. Speaking of the Chiefs….

Two Coaches One Goal - The Chiefs and the Miami Dolphins trotted out new head coaches on Sunday, both with the intention of making their current position permanent. Todd Bowles won his Miami debut over the Buffalo Bills while Romeo Crennel and his Chiefs took down the previously undefeated Packers, making the ’72 Dolphins very happy.

Tom > Tim - Tom Brady showed us all why he is one of the best quarterbacks ever. With ESPN unable to keep their mouths shut about Tim Tebow and “Tebow Mania”, Brady helped shut it for them as he threw for 320 yards and two touchdowns while running in another score as New England won in Denver 41-23. I’m a big Tebow fan, but I’m glad they lost, because ESPN might just change SportsCenter to TebowCenter. I think they forget which quarterback has three rings. Thanks Tom!

I’ve seen better hands on a clock - Did anyone else see that special on ESPN with Cris Carter and Hakeem Nicks? Carter was so impressed with how great of a catching receiver Nicks is, then Nicks goes out and drops one of the easiest touchdown passes ever from Eli Manning. Oh sweet irony!

Better late than never - At least that’s the motto of the Philadelphia Eagles and San Diego Chargers. The Chargers embarrassed the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday night improving their record to 7-7 as they now sit one game behind Denver while the Eagles dismantled the New York Jets, improving their record to 6-8, only two games behind the consistently inconsistent Dallas Cowboys in the NFC East. Speaking of the Jets….

Mark Sanchez - Why the heck is he still their quarterback? For that matter, why is Santonio Holmes mocking the Eagles after he scored a touchdown which brought the Jets to within 18? Look at that scoreboard buddy. Between Sherlock and Santonio, I’m not sure which was the bigger bust this weekend.

Currently, I cover the Orioles for the Baltimore Guide along with being addicted to the entire Major Leagues as well as the NFL. Follow me on Twitter here, or on Facebook here.

Fan Opinion: Can Vick and Eagles Salvage a Playoff…

Michael Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles have a slim chance to move on to the playoffs after shellacking the New York Jets, 45-19. Their chances are in the neighborhood of 200-1 to make the playoffs but as Lloyd Christmas said in “Dumb and Dumber”: “So you’re telling me I got a chance?”

Michael Vick needs to bring his “A’ Game the rest of the season.
Photo by: SRA Moses Ross Wikimedia Commons

LeSean McCoy said it best when learning where the Eagles stand after their win, “Sounds like a lot.”

The Eagles have no say in their fate but it will not matter if they do not win out. The Eagles can only make the playoffs by capturing their division title. They must win in Dallas in Cowboys Stadium and at home against the Washington Redskins. Then they must hope for some help. The Giants have to lose against the Jets and then the Giants must beat the Cowboys in the final game of the season.

As McCoy said, “It sounds like a lot.” It is possible for the Eagles to make the playoffs despite the convoluted route that will get them there. Luck will play a part but the Eagles will have to win out as well.

If the Eagles make the playoffs and they play like they did against the New York Jets December 18, they have a chance to become the Green Bay Packers of the 2011-2012. The Packers struggled until December last season and then Aaron Rodgers and the Packers could not be stopped once the post season began.

When Vick is healthy he makes the Eagles a formidable force. The question for Vick and Andy Reid is if Vick can stay healthy through the regular season and the NFL playoffs. The Eagles have already witnessed their future if Vick gets hurt and the future doesn’t look bright without VIck.

Vick did not have a blockbuster performance but his 274 yards passing and two touchdowns, one through the air and one on the ground, were enough to compliment LeSean McCoy’s three touchdown game.

The real story for the Eagles is a resurgent defense. Kurt Coleman continues to make big plays and Jason Babin scored three sacks for the second consecutive game to bring his season total to 18 sacks. The pass rush led by Babin is the key to the Eagles being in position to make the playoffs. Vick is important but Babin and the defense will determine the future of the Eagles.

*Todd Jacobs lives in Las Vegas but has been a Philadelphia Eagles fan since the ’70s. Members of Todd’s family were devout Eagles fans and he had little choice but to follow the Eagles from an early age.

Eagles Vs. Jets First Quarter Score: Jets Trail…

Read More: Michael Vick (QB – PHI), Brent Celek (TE – PHI), Juqua Parker (DE – PHI), Santonio Holmes (WR – NYJ), Mark Sanchez (QB – NYJ), New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles lead the New York Jets 14-0 after the first quarter of play at Lincoln Financial Field.

Eagles defensive end Juqua Parker had the first score of the first quarter on a 46-yard fumble return for a touchdown. Parker picked up the fumble by Santonio Holmes who caught a pass from Mark Sanchez but was stripped. Parker had good blocking in front of him and was untouched as he ran in for the score.

The Eagles extended their lead later in the quarter in a more tradition fashion. Michael Vick capped a 7-play, 77-yard drive with a 26-yard touchdown pass to Brent Celek. Celek was being tackled short of the endzone but was not going to be denied on the play.

The Jets could only manage 38 yards of offense in the first quarter while the Eagles had 129 yards. Philadelphia will be on offense again as the second quarter begins.

NFL Power Rankings Following Week 14: A Fan’s Take

The NFL power rankings after Week 14 are telling the same old story. Once more, seven teams distanced themselves from the rest of the NFL while the rest fought for position. For my Philadelphia Eagles, they are just fighting to avoid falling further down the basement of the power rankings, and their win over the Miami Dolphins on Dec. 11 did just that.

The Eagles are still hovering near the bottom ten of the NFL, as they could only move up two spots from No. 24 to No. 22. Their case will be much better helped by upsetting the New York Jets on Dec. 18, as Philadelphia makes its last, desperate attempt at a playoff run.

Their slim hopes were helped by the New York Giants defeating the Dallas Cowboys and making 7-6 the top record in the NFC East. For that effort, the Giants got back to the brink of the top 10 even after ending a four-game losing streak, which speaks to how out of focus the rest of the NFL is behind the top seven teams.

For the last several weeks, the power rankings have been firmly controlled by the Green Bay Packers, New England Patriots, Baltimore Ravens, Pittsburgh Steelers, New Orleans Saints, San Francisco 49ers and Houston Texans. The trend continued in Week 14 although the 49ers were the only one of the group to lose and drop a spot in the polls.

Of course, the Packers still tower over the elite as they have clinched a tie for the best record in the league. Even a loss to snap their undefeated season wouldn’t stop the Packers from being No. 1 in the final three weeks, as everyone else fights for No. 2. The Patriots have held that for a while – or if not them, the Ravens or Steelers – but New England could finally take a hit against the rising Denver Broncos on Dec. 18.

While the NFL power rankings are pretty much settled at No. 1 and at what the top seven teams are, there is still room for maneuvering in the last three weeks. Four AFC teams are fighting for a No. 1 seed as the Saints and 49ers try to get a bye week and become the biggest NFC threat to the Packers. But at this point, one mistake could ruin the playoff picture for these teams and have a long lasting impact into January.

As the clock winds down in the regular season, here are the current Week 14 power rankings as the NFL reaches the middle of its fourth quarter.

1. Green Bay Packers: 13-0

2. New England Patriots: 10-3

3. Baltimore Ravens: 10-3

4. Pittsburgh Steelers: 10-3

5. New Orleans Saints: 10-3

6. San Francisco 49ers: 10-3

7. Houston Texans: 10-3

8. Denver Broncos: 8-5

9. New York Jets: 8-5

10. Atlanta Falcons: 8-5

11. New York Giants: 7-6

12. Detroit Lions: 8-5
