Vick was one of three players to receive the “exclusive” franchise tag, which bars players from talking to other teams once free agency begins.

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning and Oakland Raiders linebacker Kamerion Wimbley also received exclusive tenders. Wimbley signed his tender Tuesday but Manning hasn’t signed his yet as talks on a long-term deal between he and the Colts are ongoing.

Under rules of the soon-to-expire collective bargaining agreement, franchise tags pay players the average of the top five players at that position. The current CBA expires at the end of the day Thursday and the players’ union has argued that franchise tags will not be valid.

Vick signing franchise tag today

Michael VickThe Philadelphia Eagles placed the franchise tag on quarterback Michael Vick(notes) two weeks ago and the Philadelphia Inquirer reports that he will finally sign it today.

If the collective bargaining agreement stays the way it is now once all the negotiating between owners and players is over, Vick will make a little more than $16 million next season, the paper notes.

The Birds are still going to try and sign the Comeback Player of the Year long-term once the negotiations finish up. “We have interest in him long-term,” team president Joe Banner said, according to the paper. “We wouldn’t be sitting here and putting a franchise tag on him if he’s somebody that we weren’t very excited about.”

Somewhere, backup QB Kevin Kolb(notes) is cringing. The team can’t try to trade the 26-year-old till a new CBA is in place.

Report: Vick to sign tender Wednesday

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick will sign his franchise tender on Wednesday, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Vick would earn more than $16 million next season if the one-year tender holds up in a potential new collective bargaining agreement. Vick and the Eagles are expected to continue to work toward a long-term deal.

“We have interest in him long term,” Eagles president Joe Banner told the Inquirer two weeks ago. “We wouldn’t be sitting here and putting a franchise tag on him if he’s somebody that we weren’t very excited about.”

After beginning last season as a backup, Vick replaced the injured Kevin Kolb in Week 2 and never relinquished his grip on the starting job. Vick passed for 3,018 yards and had 30 total touchdowns in leading the Eagles to a 10-6 record and the NFC East title.

Eagles franchise tag goes to Vick

PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Eagles have placed the franchise tag on Pro Bowl quarterback Michael Vick.

Vick led the Eagles to a 10-6 record and the NFC East title after replacing an injured Kevin Kolb in Week 1. Despite missing three games with an injury, Vick had his best season. He set career highs in yards passing (3,018), touchdowns passing (21), touchdowns rushing (9), completion percentage (62.6) and passer rating (100.2).

The Eagles tag Vick, Akers

The Philadelphia Eagles made it official Tuesday. They’ve placed their franchise tag on star quarterback Michael Vick — if such a thing still exists under the next collective bargaining agreement. The Eagles also placed their transition tag on kicker David Akers, a move that will give them a chance to match if another team attempts to sign him.

Vick should make somewhere in the neighborhood of $20 million next season. Just because the Eagles have placed the tag on him doesn’t mean they can’t negotiate a long-term contract once there’s a new CBA. With Vick under contract, look for the Eagles to listen to offers for Kevin Kolb, who is under contract through next season.

There is the quick update of the day.

Source: Michael Vick of Philadelphia Eagles to get franchise tag Tuesday

Updated: February 15, 2011, 7:04 AM ET

The Philadelphia Eagles plan to place their franchise tag on Michael Vick on Tuesday, according to a league source.

ESPN.com reported last month that the Eagles would franchise Vick. If franchise tags are upheld, the move will tie Vick to Philadelphia for the 2011 season and put the Eagles in a better position to potentially trade Kevin Kolb, who wants to start somewhere next season.

Logan Mankins received the New England Patriots’ franchise tag on Monday. But no players are expected to sign franchise tags while the NFLPA challenges their validity.

Vick made $5.25 million in 2010 but would make an estimated $20 million — the average salary for the five highest-paid quarterbacks in the league — if he is designated the Eagles’ franchise player.

Vick was selected to start the Pro Bowl, his fourth trip to Hawaii in eight seasons. He set career highs in yards passing (3,018), touchdowns passing (21), touchdowns rushing (9), completion percentage (62.6) and passer rating (100.2). The Eagles (10-7) were 8-3 in games he started and finished.

Philadelphia Eagles franchise Michael Vick, give David Akers transition tag

Updated: February 15, 2011, 12:56 PM ET

The Philadelphia Eagles placed their franchise tag on quarterback Michael Vick on Tuesday, the team announced.

ESPN NFL Insider John Clayton says franchising QB Michael Vick allows the Eagles to take offers on QB Kevin Kolb. Plus, Clayton says he’s no longer optimistic about a new CBA before the March deadline.

In addition, the Eagles said they have placed their transition tag on kicker David Akers.

Under rules of the soon-to-expire collective bargaining agreement, franchise tags pay players the average of the top five players at that position. Transition tags pay players the average of the top 10 at the position, plus it gives teams the ability to match any offer given to the designated player in free agency.

It is uncertain if franchise and transition tags will be part of the next CBA.

“Michael Vick and David Akers were two of our most valuable players last year,” coach Andy Reid said in a statement announcing the moves. “They were well deserving of their Pro Bowl berths and we’re happy to take this step to ensure that they’ll be back in Philadelphia next season.”

ESPN.com reported last month that the Eagles would franchise Vick. If franchise tags are upheld, the move will tie Vick to Philadelphia for the 2011 season and put the Eagles in a better position to potentially trade backup Kevin Kolb, who wants to be a starter elsewhere next season.

Mosley: What About Kolb?

Mosley Now that the Eagles have tagged Michael Vick, what about backup QB Kevin Kolb? The expiring CBA makes a trade unlikely, ESPN.com’s Matt Mosley writes. Blog

Logan Mankins received the New England Patriots’ franchise tag on Monday. No players are expected to sign franchise tags while the NFLPA challenges their validity.

Vick made $5.25 million in 2010 but would make an estimated $20 million — the average salary of the five highest-paid quarterbacks in the league — as the Eagles’ franchise player.

Vick was selected to start the Pro Bowl last month, his fourth trip to Hawaii in eight seasons. He is coming off a season of career highs in passing yards (3,018), passing touchdowns (21), rushing touchdowns (9), completion percentage (62.6) and passer rating (100.2). The Eagles (10-7) were 8-3 in games Vick started and finished.

Vick was voted The Associated Press Comeback Player of the Year after missing two seasons while serving a prison sentence for his role in a dogfighting ring, and he played only sparingly in 2009.

Eagles QB Kolb likes Arizona Cardinals

Kevin KolbPhiladelphia Eagles backup quarterback Kevin Kolb(notes) is hoping that the Arizona Cardinals, a team in search of a QB, take a gander at him this offseason, according to Philly.com. The site reports that just before the Super Bowl, Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald(notes) “gave the team’s front office some advice about the quarterback position in Arizona, and suggested Kevin Kolb as a possible target.”

“I mean, if he’s not the best, he’s one of the best receivers in the NFL, superstar,” Kolb said on Philadelphia sports-radio station WIP, according to the site. “For a guy like that to say something about me, it means a lot. And it’s awfully flattering, and I hope that if something happens, their name comes up.”
