Oct 22, 2011 – Last week against the Philadelphia Eagles, the Washington Redskins limited Michael Vick to 237 yards passing with one touchdown and one interception, and only 54 yards rushing, which is significantly below his season average. Why then might we advocate starting a similarly run-happy Cam Newton at quarterback against the Redskins this week then? Because Newton isn’t Vick.

Since the beginning of last season, Vick has moved further and further away from being the quarterback we remember from his past years in Atlanta. No longer does he look to run the moment his first target fails to get open. Newton hasn’t quite taken that step yet though.

Newton has had at least one rushing touchdown in each of the last three weeks, and looks likely to get one on Sunday as well. Using Yahoo! standard scoring, Newton is the second highest scoring quarterback so far this season, behind only Aaron Rodgers. The fantasy football site numberFire projects Newton to earn 19.27 fantasy points this week, so if your league values rushing yards and touchdowns as highly as most, insert him into your starting lineup with confidence.

A war of words on Twitter between two Philadelphia Eagles beat writers escalated into a physical altercation Wednesday, with one writer landing a punch to his counterpart’s head.

Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News and Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer had to be separated by their peers at the Eagles practice facility, according to local sports radio personality and WCAU-TV contributor Howard Eskin.

The two men were involved in a Twitter spat Tuesday, during which McLane called the elder Bowen an “old hack that hasn’t broken a story in years.”

Bowen, who vowed on Twitter to handle his “business in person” landed a punch to McLane’s head before the feuding beat writers were quickly broken up, according to Eskin.

Tempers flared after McLane posted a tweet Tuesday regarding the status of Eagles quarterback Michael Vick, in which he wrote Vick would likely start Sunday despite a bone bruise in his non-throwing hand.

The tweet prompted a line from Bowen which read, “Oh, and [by the way], nobody has any idea on Tuesday whether Michael Vick is starting this week.”

McLane apparently took offense to Bowen’s tweet, prompting the younger reporter to issue a slamming indictment.

“How about if Vick starts Sunday you have to say on [cable show] Daily News Live, ‘I’m an old hack that hasn’t broken a story in years, needs my editor to keep my blog fresh, and missed Vick on Monday because I was cluelessly tapping away on my computer and had to steal quotes from hard-working reporters who have a clue,’” McLane wrote directly to Bowen.

Bowen’s only response to McLane’s unflattering assessment was to say he would handle it “face to face.”

“I don’t intend to have any tantrums on Twitter, myself,” he replied to one follower. “If I have something to say to someone, it will be face to face.”

“I will handle my business in person, not thru yapping on Twitter,” Bowen wrote.

According to Philly.com, Bowen has covered the Eagles for the Daily News since 2002. He spent nearly 13 years covering the Flyers prior to taking the Eagles beat.

McLane began covering the Eagles for The Inquirer in 2009.

PHILADELPHIA – DeSean Jackon’s heartbreaking punt return is the image that will live in infamy from last year’s collapse by the Giants against the Philadelphia Eagles, but that’s not what Perry Fewell sees when he looks at the film.

He sees his defense in the midst of smothering Michael Vick and the Eagles’ high-powered offense. Then he sees them suddenly, inexplicably forgetting how to tackle, cover, and even pressure the quarterback.

He sees Vick and his dangerous array of weapons running open and untouched all over the field.

“There were a number of opportunities,” Fewell recalls. “We had a chance to tackle Vick or tackle (running back LeSean) McCoy or tackle (receiver DeSean) Jackson or whomever and get off the field. The memories are so vivid that I don’t want to recall them because I’m looking forward to this next opportunity. But just our ability to tackle and finish what we started.”

Sunday, nine months after they threw away a 21-point lead, the NFC East and their playoff hopes in perhaps the most devastating eight minutes and 17 seconds in franchise history, Fewell and the Giants’ defense get a second chance.

In easily the most anticipated game on the Giants’ schedule, they’ll face the “Dream Team” Eagles Sunday afternoon with revenge on their minds. They tried all week to downplay what happened last Dec. 19, when they blew a 31-10 lead at the Meadowlands and lost 38-31 on Jackson’s game-ending punt return for a touchdown, but that collapse has loomed over everything the Giants (1-1) and Eagles (1-1) have done since.

Their ability for revenge and chance to snap the Eagles’ six-game winning streak in this series, have been hampered by injuries to a defense that will be without three starters – cornerback Terrell Thomas (knee), linebacker Jonathan Goff (knee) and defensive end Osi Umenyiora (knee). The Eagles, meanwhile, spent the offseason adding to an all-star roster that already included Vick (who should play despite the concussion he suffered last week), Jackson, McCoy, tight end Brent Celek and receiver Jeremy Maclin.

They have the perfect offense to stretch an already thin defense, and exploit a struggling secondary – a secondary that in the four games since that Eagles disaster has allowed every quarterback they’ve faced to throw for more than 300 yards.

“We’ve had some problems,” Fewell says. “Some of the issues (last week) were the same in Week 1. Some were different. I felt like we got better last week. I saw some improvement in our secondary play. But then I saw some lapses in our secondary play. We’re a work in progress.”

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback
Michael Vick has no concussion symptoms, three days after
suffering a neck and head injury, and may be able to play
against the New York Giants this weekend.

Vick participated in the Eagles’ non-contact walkthrough
today, coach Andy Reid said. Team trainer Rick Burkholder said
Vick is “progressing” and his only symptoms after the injury
are soreness in his neck and jaw.

Vick must pass concussion tests, including one from an
independent neurologist, before he’s cleared to play, according
to National Football League protocol. The testing likely will
take place over the next several days, Burkholder said. The
Eagles host the Giants on Sept. 25.

“He’s right where we expected him to be,” Burkholder said
in a news conference. “Everything is progressing and we’re not
going to push him ahead. Michael will continue to do the process
and he’s doing fine.”

Vince Young or Mike Kafka will start against the Giants if
Vick isn’t able to play. Young was inactive the first two weeks
because of a hamstring injury.

“I’m going to get them all ready,” Reid said at the news
conference. “We’ll go with the one who’s the healthiest. That’s
the way I’m looking at it.”

Giants linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka said yesterday the team
has been preparing for Vick or a backup at quarterback.

“Vick is a one-of-a-kind quarterback,” Kiwanuka said.
“It’s prepare for a regular football team or prepare for Vick.
As long as you have preparation for Vick, you can go back to
playing what you could consider a regular quarterback.”

Injury Against Falcons

Vick was injured during the third quarter of last week’s
35-31 loss to the Atlanta Falcons, when he was spun by Falcons
safety William Moore and slammed face-first into the chest of
Eagles lineman Todd Herremans. Vick’s head snapped back and he
bit his tongue because he wasn’t wearing a mouthpiece.

Vick was kept out of the game after failing a baseline
concussion test. The Eagles turned to Kafka, a third-string
quarterback making his NFL debut, and gave up 14 points in the
fourth quarter to blow a 31-21 lead.

The Eagles had an 8-2 record in games Vick started and
finished last season. Philadelphia was 2-4 when Vick didn’t play
or left with an injury, as he did in a Week 4 loss to Washington
when he sustained cartilage damage in his ribs.

“As long as Michael continues through his process, he’ll
have a chance to get himself right for this game,” Reid said.

Vick took over as the Eagles’ starter last season, just
over a year being released from a 23-month sentence for helping
run a dogfighting ring. He was voted the NFL’s Comeback Player
of the Year and last month signed a six-year contract that may
be worth up to $100 million.

Eagles Comeback

The Eagles and Giants played one of last season’s most
memorable games, with Philadelphia winning 38-31 on Dec. 19.

The Eagles scored 28 fourth-quarter points to erase a 31-10
deficit and won on DeSean Jackson’s 65-yard punt return for a
touchdown on the final play. Vick threw two touchdown passes and
ran for another score in the fourth quarter.

“I think that if Michael Vick can play, he will play,”
Giants coach Tom Coughlin said on a conference call yesterday.

The Eagles have won six straight games against New York
dating back to 2008.

					(Rich Schultz – AP)
In a GC article published Wednesday on the magazine’s Web site, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick said he never wanted to be in Philadelphia, but that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and others convinced him to sign in the City of Brothery Love instead of Cincinnati or Buffalo.

One day later — which seems to be the standard retraction time frame for outspoken athletes — Vick clarified his remarks in a statement released Thursday afternoon.

“I did speak with many people, but the decision to sign in Philadelphia was based on my discussions with my agent, my family and with Coach (Andy) Reid. And after those discussions, it became clear to me that this was the place I wanted to play and resume my NFL career. The commissioner never told me to sign or not sign with particular teams. Again, I want to make it perfectly clear that this was a decision I made and, as I have said numerous times before, I’m very happy with the way it has worked out for me and my family.”

In an e-mail to Pro Football Talk, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello, rebuffed Vick’s claims in the article.

“Michael Vick’s decision on where to play to put himself in the best position to succeed was entirely his own. Commissioner Goodell obviously met and spoke to Michael and his representatives as part of his decision on whether to reinstate Michael and on what terms. But the Commissioner would never steer players to or away from particular teams and did not do so in this case.”

Tony Dungy, who helped mentor Vick during his transition back to the NFL after his release from federal prison, said Thursday on
The Dan Patrick Show
that while he and others may have suggested to Vick that Philadelphia might have been the best fit, he doubted Goodell would have pushed the quarterback toward the Eagles.

The NFL prides itself on parity and the relative balance across the league is evident from year to year. But in Buffalo and Cincinnati, where losing has become an all-too-familiar rite of fall, you had to figure Bills and Bengals fans would have a strong reaction to Vick’s remarks.

Bills Hall of Fame running back Thurman Thomas has already called for an investigation.

Here’s Vick’s original quote from the
GC story:

“I think I can say this now, because it’s not going to hurt anybody’s feelings, and it’s the truth. I didn’t want to come to Philadelphia. Being the third-team quarterback is nothing to smile about. Cincinnati and Buffalo were better options.”

DeSean Jackson ended his holdout on Monday morning, officially reporting to training camp with the Philadelphia Eagles. Unhappy with his current contract situation, Jackson stayed away from camp, only showing up with the threat of losing a year of service time towards free agency. Under the new collective bargaining agreement, camp holdouts are subject to a fine of $30,000 per day and can lose service time if a holdout lasts past a predetermined date.

Eagles quarterback Michael Vick was understandably happy to have Jackson back in the mix, and praised the dynamic wide receiver on Monday.

“I can tell you he’s excited to be back,” Vick said, according to the Philadelphia Daily News. “He’s ready to come back and play football this season, ready to come back and handle his business, be the consummate teammate. He’s going to come in and let his play speak for itself, come in with a different attitude.”

The Eagles are reportedly open to negotiating a long-term contract with Jackson, though no talks have taken place as of yet. Jackson did not practice on Monday morning after missing the first 12 days of camp.

Read More: Michael Vick (QB – PHI), Plaxico Burress (WR – NYG), Philadelphia Eagles

When looking at where former New York Giants WR Plaxico Burress will land following his release from prison, the Philadelphia Eagles have continually come up as an option. One of the very few dissenters in Burress-to-the-Eagles was Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirier.

The good news is for Eagles fans who want Burress is that McLane has flipped the script. He’s now saying there’s interest there from the Eagles side.

Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie had a chance to decline the team’s interest in Burress but declined, instead suggesting that, if the Eagles were to sign Burress, they would go through a similar evaluation as they did with QB Michael Vick, who was also exiting prison when Philly signed him. Via Philly.com:

“We evaluate case by case. It involved a lot of research into Michael – what kind of teammate he was. What his motivations were. How much he cared for the game,” Lurie said. “We’ve shown we’ll take chances if it’s warranted.”

So Burress to Philly isn’t so crazy after all, despite what the AP says. The only thing we need now is to end the lockout so some team can actually make a move on him.

Vick, who spent nearly two years at the federal penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kansas, after he pleaded guilty to bankrolling a dog-fighting ring in 2007, shared some of his own prison experiences in what he said was a message of hope and encouragement to prisoners at Avon.
Vick, who spent nearly two years at the federal penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kansas, after he pleaded guilty to bankrolling a dog-fighting ring in 2007, shared some of his own prison experiences in what he said was a message of hope and encouragement to prisoners at Avon.

“What I wanted to get across to them was that we all have to try to be instruments of change,” the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback said before taking part in the 84th memorial birthday celebration for Rev. Abe Brown, the founder of the Abe Brown Ministries, at Higgins Hall.

“That’s been my message, and it’s something that I’ve been proactive with in the community and have been trying to (deliver) since I stepped out of prison. It’s something I’m excited about doing, but it was something I never (did in front of prison inmates) before today, so it was a totally different realm for me.”

When Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine Caraway handed Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick the key to the city of Dallas recently, he opened the lock of controversy. Jonnie England, spokeswoman for Metroplex Animal Coalition, expressed her outrage that the key was given to a convicted felon accused of horrendous crimes. Caraway said that Vick deserved the honor because he turned his life around and is a hero to many. An earlier announcement by Vick that he wished to adopt a dog for his children sparked national controversy, revolving around second chances and redemption.

He was the highest-paid member of the NFL when he was convicted of running a brutal dog-fighting operation in Surry County, Va. The investigation uncovered the truth about animals that were maimed, crippled and ripped apart. Dogs were tested for aggression; those who failed – refused to fight – were first beaten, then brutally murdered. Some were electrocuted. Others were lifted upwards by ropes and slammed to the ground, forcibly drowned in a bucket of water or strangled by hanging.

The Atlanta Falcons dropped Michael Vick, but he was given a second chance by the Philadelphia Eagles. Does he feel remorse for the brutality he inflicted on innocent animals? Is he redeemed? As he runs across a football field, cheered by millions of adoring fans, with a multimillion-dollar contract, this is difficult to see.

He went on a speaking engagement for the Humane Society, telling urban youths that dog fighting is a mistake. I believe he did so to clean up his image. With his wealth and fame, he could have made a difference, but he’s done nothing. All over America, ordinary people run animal rescue organizations, working tirelessly on shoestring budgets. Recently, in Sulphur, Okla., a black and white puppy survived two attempts to euthanize him. Because of this, he was put in foster care and given a second chance. This spotlights the fact that more people are needed to help with animal welfare. Implementation of spay and neuter programs could spare puppies like this one from the ordeal of euthanasia.

The story of redemption doesn’t reside within the gridiron of the NFL, but with compassion and commitment toward animals, which Vick never displayed. When caught, he said, “I made a mistake.” Immanuel Kant wrote, “We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals.” In my view, three words describe Michael Vick perfectly: inhumane, heartless, monster.SHEILA YOUNGHutchinson

What do you guys think about this.

Michael Vick(notes) is as good at dodging commitments as he is at eluding defenders. For the third time in as many weeks, the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback has canceled a scheduled appearance, this time on a waiting live audience.Â

Vick was scheduled to appear live on “ESPN First Take” on Friday afternoon. Late in the show, however, host Dana Jacobson talked to the assembled crowd at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and informed them that Vick was a no-show:

“We have some bad news. We were supposed to have an interview with Michael Vick, we’ve been telling you about it, and sadly the Eagles actually pulled the interview, is what I’m being told. In all honesty, we were looking forward to talking to Michael about what has been a turnaround season for him and what has been a rough few years and getting to some other stuff.”

The Eagles quickly refuted the story, claiming Vick was never asked to be on the program. “It’s ridiculous,” an Eagles spokesman said in an e-mailed statement to Pro Football Talk that never actually denied whether the team yanked Vick from the interview or not. All it claims is that Vick himself didn’t cancel.Â

It’s a high-stakes game of “he said/she said.” Unless ESPN apologizes for Jacobson’s remarks, we’ll never know the real story. Either way, the Eagles need to learn from this episode and change the media strategy in place for Vick.

If he’s not going to sit for interviews, come out and say so. There’s no point in dangling Vick as an interview subject to Oprah only to pull him away at the last second. The team is cleaning up self-created messes by letting the media think they have a shot to talk with the quarterback. The truth about why he’s canceling is irrelevant now that there’s a perception that he’s unreliable.

You can’t blame Philadelphia for not wanting Vick to do interviews. His on-field play was doing enough to turn around his image. Why risk ruining all that in one soundbite? All it takes is one stupid statement or flub to make national news and erase Vick’s public rehabilitation.

In protecting Vick, the Eagles are harming his reputation. Bailing on Oprah was understandable and would have been forgotten by now if it wasn’t brought up again when Vick canceled an appearance with at-risk kids. Now it’s back on everyone’s mind again. No matter how ridiculous, the Philadelphia Eagles have no one to blame for that but themselves.

Update: The Maxwell Club took responsibility for the incident. Club president Ron Jaworski said in a statement to PFT:

“There was a communication problem that was totally the fault of the Maxwell Football Club in clearing Michael for the interview. Michael Vick was never asked to do the interview and never cancelled.

“Michael has been very cooperative in all our dealings with him in regard to winning the Bert Bell Award as the NFL Player of the Year.”

In retrospect, you probably shouldn’t expect too much from a club that willingly chose to give its NFL Player of the Year Award to Michael Vick.

PHILADELPHIA - The Hollywood Reporter says Oprah Winfrey and her producers worked for months with Philadelphia Eagles' quarterback Michael Vick on his planned appearance on her show.

PHILADELPHIA – The Hollywood Reporter says Oprah Winfrey and her producers worked for months with Philadelphia Eagles’ quarterback Michael Vick on his planned appearance on her show.

Vick cancelled the taping on Tuesday, which was scheduled for February 22.

A source told Fox 29 News on Wednesday that the decision was made at the Philadelphia Eagles’ request.

The Eagles contacted Fox 29 News on Thursday morning to dispute the report, denying that they pressured Vick to cancel the interview.

Winfrey herself told the Reporter that she had been “working for months” on the Vick interview, and already pre-taped segments with Vick.

Winfrey will air an interview with David Arquette instead of Michael Vick on Feb. 24.

Winfrey told THR Thursday that she found out Vick had canceled via an email from her executive producer, Sheri Salata.

“He said personal reasons. We’re not going to push it,” Winfrey said, adding that her staff “had been working behind the scenes for months” on the interview.

“We did a field trip with him. We had been shooting with Michael Vick. And the fact that he pulled out and all his people…” Winfrey said. “We move on.”

Vick was scheduled to tape an extended interview with Winfrey to air on February 24. But Vick issued a statement on Wednesday that he would not appear on Winfrey’s show.

The Eagles placed the franchise tag on Vick on Tuesday, meaning he will get an estimated payday between $16 million and $20 million next season in a one-year deal with the Eagles.
