As soon as Vince Young said the term, “dream team,” fans of the Philadelphia Eagles must have been scared. While the team was the most active during the offseason in bringing in stars, comments from the least talented of the new acquisitions were sure to cause problems. The Eagles struggled to an 8-8 record and while some players had monstrous fantasy seasons, others faltered. Who are the biggest surprise and disappointments, and which star can say they were the Eagles’ 2011 fantasy MVP?

MVP – LeSean McCoy

There is no doubt in my mind that McCoy is the best running back in the NFL, especially so in fantasy football. This season, his yardage figures don’t compare to those of Ray Rice, but the instability at the quarterback position in Philadelphia can be blamed for that. He rushed for 1,309 yards on 273 carries and made 48 catches for 315 yards with 20 total touchdowns.

Biggest Surprise – Jason Babin

The eight-year pro is one of the offseason acquisitions for the Eagles, but he was probably the least hyped. When the Eagles signed him, it was his sixth team in six seasons, including a previous stint with the team. As a member of the Tennessee Titans a year ago, he made 13 sacks and was a force on the defensive line. What he did this season was grow from that success to become one of the best sack-artists in the NFL. He made 18 sacks to go with 40 total tackles, rewarding those fantasy GMs that selected him in IDP leagues.

Biggest Disappointment – Michael Vick

The former Atlanta Falcons’ quarterback began his second season as the Philadelphia starter and suffered through the same problems he has suffered from his entire career. He missed three games due to injury, adding further proof that his body type isn’t one for taking hits. He did set a new career high in passing yards with 3,303, but struggled in all other facets. A year ago, he turned the ball over nine total times, while this season, he threw 14 interceptions and lost four fumbles. It is hard to keep your team in the game when you keep giving the ball away.

Another disappointing stat for Vick were his rushing scores. A year ago, he set a career-high with nine and followed that up this season with just one. Vick can still be a fantasy star, but he won’t be a first round selection in 2012 like he was this season.

The Eagles struggled early and never recovered. A four-game winning streak at the end came too late and they finished 8-8, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2007 and just the fourth time in coach Andy Reid’s 13 seasons.

“It’s going to motivate us to work harder,” quarterback Michael Vick said Monday. “It’s very disappointing.”

After an offseason spending spree brought several accomplished players to Philadelphia and added to a roster that already featured Vick, LeSean McCoy and DeSean Jackson, the Eagles were the talk of the NFL. They were defending NFC East champions and seemingly on the rise.

So when Young compared his new teammates to the Miami Heat, some people scoffed but most expected the Eagles to make a serious run at the first championship since 1960. Even team president Joe Banner declared the Eagles “all-in” and called this a Super Bowl-or-bust year.

But the team quickly imploded.

“There were definitely red flags,” said defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins, who won the Super Bowl with Green Bay last season. “A lot of people see Super Bowl, or I think they let the fact that the Super Bowl is there, and so many people talk about it right away. You can hear people nowadays, they come out of the draft talking about Super Bowl and I think it kind of gets thrown around too loosely now.

“It’s obviously the ultimate goal in where you want to get to, but you have to understand that you have to work hard. It’s something that is a process and you have to take it each step at a time to get to it and I think a lot of time people just want to jump from preseason to the Super Bowl without doing what it takes in between.”

Various factors contributed to a four-game losing streak that dropped the Eagles to 1-4 and doomed them from the beginning. Vick couldn’t finish two games in September because of injuries, the offense made critical turnovers and the defense struggled mightily as new players tried to adjust to new defensive coordinator Juan Castillo’s system.

Finishing games was a problem, too. The Eagles lost five games in which they led in the fourth quarter. One play could’ve made the difference in a season where the division was mediocre. The Eagles weren’t eliminated from playoff contention until right before their next-to-last game kicked off and they ended up second behind the New York Giants (9-7).

“It will be tough to sit at home and watch the playoffs, but we have to maintain a positive outlook about what we could be and go into the offseason knowing that we can play with the best teams in the league,” wide receiver Jeremy Maclin said. “Philly is not used to not being in the playoffs. I think guys will be hungry. This offseason will be very critical for us and I think it will be good.”

It’s uncertain whether the team will make major changes. Reid was criticized heavily this season and many fans want him gone. They chanted “Fire Andy!” during a loss to New England. Reid refused to discuss his future after Sunday’s game and wasn’t available to reporters on Monday. He’s expected to return, but his coaching staff may look different.

The Philadelphia Eagles finished their season with a convincing win against the last place Washington Redskins, solidifying their 2011 dominance over the NFC East.

Michael Vick threw for 335 yards and three touchdown passes, to lead the Eagles over the Washington Redskins 34-10 Sunday for their fourth straight win. With the win, the Eagles finished their season 5-1 in the division on the year. They came one New York Jets win away from making the postseason.

Had they have made the postseason, they would have been the second hottest team in the NFC going into the playoffs (behind the New Orleans Saints who have 8 straight wins), but, trust me, no one was looking forward to seeing the Eagles—not by any means.

“That’s the unfortunate part,” Vick said. “Everybody’s gelling together, our team is getting closer as a unit, everybody’s understanding their coaches and what they’re trying to do and their philosophy. We know what needs to be done. We’ll fly under the radar and try to shock people next year. Next year will be totally different. I promise you.”

Fact is: there’s no flying under the radar for them—they’re seen vividly, and heard loudly.

Still, in moving forward, there are a lot of decisions to make within the organization—even if there aren’t many changes made in the end.

The team has decisions about the personnel on the sidelines to make, and some positions on the field to look after, as well. Of course, in almost as if deliberate fashion, Eagles’ head coach Andy Reid has nothing to tell us about his thoughts on the matter. His comments on this year’s impact on the franchise’s future were, “We’ve got to get better all the way around, starting with me,” Reid said. “This wasn’t good enough.”

Quite frankly, I don’t know why I continue to type that lazy sentence.

Either way, this post is not about the bad, it’s about the good.

The final four games in which the Eagles beat their opponents 125-46, will do good for their morale going forward,. It will also do well for the offseason excitement, while allowing the Eagles to come into next year just as confident as they were the beginning of this year; but more experienced and knowing better how they’re supposed to play. No “Dream Team” quotes, no thinking just because you’re talented you’ve booked a Super Bowl berth, and no barking at the fans because your on-field play is horrid. Just strap up the cleats, and get the ball rolling again.

Let’s just consider this year an extremely extended session of OTAs.

That’s the way I look at it. Because the team that showed up in those last few games, certainly were what everyone had expected from the beginning.

Just a bit too little, too late.

“You have to analyze everything that happened and figure out how not to let it happen again,” Vick said. “We’ve got a lot of soul-searching to do, a lot of thinking to do. I think our opportunities will arise.”

Even though the NFL will go on this season, there should be a lot of excitement in Eagles’ nation when the NFL season restarts again.

The Philadelphia Eagles want to finish the 2011 season on a high note. They will have that chance when they take on the Washington Redskins on Sunday, January 1. The Eagles are seeking their fourth straight win in a season that has been mostly disappointing. As an Eagles fan, I plan on watching this game to see how the team finishes. I would hope most fans would watch the game as well. It doesn’t really mean anything, but it is one last chance to see the Eagles this season. After this game, all of the questions begin.

The Eagles already beat the Redskins once this season. They are 4-1 against opponents from the NFC East. Washington is easily the worst team in the division so Philadelphia should have no problem winning this game. For fans, the final score doesn’t really matter. Eagles fans are smart enough to know that finishing 8-8 or 7-9 really isn’t that different if it doesn’t involve a playoff berth. Instead, the focus should be on how each player looks on the field. I want to see if the defensive line remains aggressive. I want to see if the secondary can be strong with Asante Samuel out of the game. Offensively, I want to see if DeSean Jackson can prove he belongs here in 2012. I also want to see if Michael Vick can put together a strong game.

These are the kinds of things that fans should look at in this game. As I said, the season ends after this game and soon it will be time to start thinking about the draft and free agency. But with one more game to watch, we can still think about football. The Eagles should win this game, but it won’t save their season. Instead, it is about building for 2012. Some of these players won’t be back with the Eagles in 2012. Others are hoping to land bigger roles with the team. The players should think of this is one final audition for next season. This kind of disappointment won’t stand for another season.

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick reflected on the Eagles season today and the future as his team heads for an early offseason after they were eliminated from playoff contention.

Vick on the realization that his season is ending on Sunday:

“Yeah, it was hard. I was just out on the field just saying to myself it wasn’t supposed to end like this. But I think God has a defined plan for everything that goes on in everybody’s lives and all of the guys in this locker room and it all remains to be seen. So we just have to keep the faith and keep believing and just pray that better days are ahead and I think they are.”

Vick on the fans who were disappointed with the season Philadelphia has had:

“We’re all going through it together. We want to win just as bad as they do and, you know, certain things just didn’t happen the way that we wanted them to and this is where the chips fell. So hopefully, we’re all disappointed and wish that the outcome could have been different but we apologize and hopefully we can give them want they want very soon.”

Vick didn’t want to go into details on what he wanted to work on during Sunday’s game. He did say that he didn’t feel any pressure to win a Super Bowl next season, although it will be a goal of his, as it is every season.

The Philadelphia Eagles have plenty of reasons to be bitter at the New York Jets. First the Eagles destroyed the Jets on Dec. 18 to get their hopes up for a miracle playoff run, and then the Jets ruined that by losing to the New York Giants on Dec. 24. But while Philadelphia fans are stewing in disappointment, they can take solace in how New York fans – also like myself – are equally disappointed in their team.

The Jets have gone from potential Super Bowl contenders to playoff long shots in the span of just a few weeks. What’s more, New York has lived through this situation before – which pretty much triggered the Rex Ryan/Mark Sanchez era to begin with.

Before Ryan and Sanchez arrived in 2009, New York was just coming off the end of its stint in the Brett Favre soap opera. In 2008, the Jets had Super Bowl hype around them when Favre came to town, but they started slowly with a 3-3 record. Likewise in 2011, the team stumbled out of the gate to a 2-3 start. Yet in midseason, the 2008 and 2011 squads got on a roll and looked ready to make a big run.

The 2008 team was a bit hotter, as it won five straight games to go to 8-3. And since the defending champion Giants only had one loss at the time, hype for an all-New York Super Bowl was building up. However, once the Jets got their eighth win everything started to fall apart – like it has for the 2011 edition.

The outcomes aren’t completely similar, since Favre’s Jets did at least get a ninth win while Sanchez’s team is still stuck at 8-7. But in both cases, they had chances to lock up playoff berths and utterly collapsed in the month of December. Favre ran out of gas and was more hobbled up than usual, three years before Sanchez completely crumbled against the Eagles and Giants.

The 2008 Jets got so bad in their final two losses that it triggered a full scale makeover, as Favre “retired” again, Eric Mangini was fired and the Ryan era was ready to begin. New York seemed to get the better end of that deal with two straight AFC title game appearances, yet Ryan and Sanchez have now reached the low point of their tenure.

If the 2011 Jets complete their collapse and miss the playoffs as well, it might not get Ryan and Sanchez out of town like the 2008 downfall did to Mangini and Favre. However, after three years of talk and bluster and no Super Bowls for Ryan, and after another season of regression from Sanchez, their time is starting to run out. After this, New York might not forgive another year or two with this kind of ending – or any other ending before the first week of February.

In 2009 and 2010, the Jets proved to be experts at ending a season on a hot streak. But in between , there have been a pair of pretty ugly Decembers that have kept New York from January. The consequences for the horrible ending of 2011 may not be as severe as the ones from 2008. Yet Ryan and Sanchez’s window of opportunity is getting smaller, and that might be severe enough before long.

FILE – In this Dec. 18, 2011, file photo, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick (7) scores a touchdown as New York Jets defensive back Kyle Wilson can’t make the stop in the first half of an NFL football game in Philadelphia. Labeled the “Dream Team” by backup quarterback Vince Young, the Eagles were a nightmare instead. The defending NFC East champions were the talk of the NFL after a wild offseason spending spree that brought several former Pro Bowl players to Philadelphia. But the team

A meaningless regular-season game for the Philadelphia Eagles usually means resting their starters for the playoffs.
Not this year.
The Eagles (7-8) are going home after Sunday’s game against the Washington Redskins (5-10). It’s the first time since 2007 they didn’t make the playoffs and just the fourth time it’s happened in coach Andy Reid’s 13 seasons.
That doesn’t soften the blow.
“Obviously 8-8 wasn’t our goal,” quarterback Michael Vick said Wednesday. “We expected to be in the playoffs. I think we have to take all the positives we can learn from this season and hopefully we’ll come back and look like a different team next year.”
As the season winds down, the Eagles are playing their best football. They’ve won three straight games and have outscored their opponents 91-36 in that span. The problem is they didn’t play that well in the beginning. A 1-4 start doomed Philadelphia.
“As coaches and as players, I think you’re asked that question you’re going to say ‘We wanted it to happen Week 1.’” Reid said. “In reality, there were a lot of moving parts and that didn’t happen. A lot of that is my responsibility, to make sure that that gets taken care of. There are a lot of things I could have done better with that. The bottom line is they’re together now, and they have an opportunity to play a good football team and continue to get better as a unit.”
Vick and the rest of the healthy starters will be out there for the final time this season against the Redskins. LeSean McCoy, Jason Peters and Jason Babin get another chance to play in the Pro Bowl on Jan. 29.
It’s somewhat of a rare sight to see starters playing in the last game. Reid rested his regulars in the finale three times in the previous seven years because the Eagles already had a playoff berth locked up and couldn’t affect their seeding with a win.
Considering Minnesota’s Adrian Peterson sustained a serious knee injury last week, there was some though that Reid would give his backups more playing time. But he has no plans to treat this as a glorified preseason game.
“When you love the game of football, you always have to play with pride and passion, because you never know which game may be your last,” Vick said. “I’ll never just sit there and say, ‘There’s nothing to play for.’ That wasn’t the mindset I had when I first put on a helmet when I was 7-years-old and it’s not my mindset today.”
The Eagles, who entered the season with Super Bowl expectations and tons of hype, missed an opportunity to win a mediocre division because of their struggles early in the season.
Five of their first six losses were by 7 points or fewer and they blew a fourth-quarter lead five times. Part of the problem was too many new players and new coaches trying to make adjustments to new schemes. But sloppiness also was a major issue. Poor tackling, failure to execute fundamentals and turnovers were key factors in all their losses.
“I think, maybe it was an adjustment, maybe it was just not having a sense of urgency or unity,” defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins said. “You know, there’s a lot of things that you can sit there and think about, but we just, for whatever reason, didn’t do it early, but we’ve pulled together. This team has had a lot of resolve and a lot of fight in them and that’s good because that’s something that you have to have, something you look for.”
Still, it’s too late to matter this season.

Gotta run!.

Despite a rough season in 2011, the Philadelphia Eagles had three players elected to the Pro Bowl. Jason Peters, LeSean McCoy, and Jason Babin were all selected as part of the 2011 Pro Bowl team. All three will start for the NFC team. The Eagles have sent a lot of players during the Andy Reid era so it is not surprising that three players made the roster in 2011. As an Eagles fan, I don’t think anyone will complain about the three players earning their spot on this team.

Peters is one of the best offensive linemen in the NFL. On a unit that improved as the season progressed, Peters easily proved that he was as good as ever. He rarely made any mistakes on the line and might deserve consideration as the team’s MVP. He is easily one of the best acquisitions of the Reid era. I have to think that with Peters playing at this level and still in the prime of his career, the offensive line for the Eagles will be set.

McCoy has had a spectacular season. He has crossed the 1,300 yard mark already and has 20 total touchdowns. That is a franchise record. Had he had not had several games where the Eagles simply didn’t run the football, McCoy could have set a team record for rushing yards as well. McCoy is a special player and was definitely the best playmaker on the roster. He beat out some quality running backs to earn the starting spot on the NFC roster.

Babin figured to be a Pro Bowl lock given his ability to get sacks. He has 18 sacks through 15 games. Babin’s aggressive nature and ability to get to the quarterback were the reasons the Eagles decided to sign him. While Babin takes some heat for his ineptitude in the running game, he is definitely a worthy Pro Bowl selection. He is a sack machine that still has an outside chance at setting a new franchise record. Any time you are pushing for a record owned by Reggie White, you are having a good year.

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Philadelphia Eagles today announced the following three
players have earned a spot on the NFC roster for the 2011 Pro Bowl: DE Jason
Babin, RB LeSean McCoy, T Jason Peters.

Babin ranks second in the NFL in 2011 with a
career-high 18.0 sacks, trailing only Jared Allen (18.5), and contributing to a
relentless Eagles pass-rush that sits atop the NFL with 49 sacks. His sack
total this year is currently tied for the third-most ever by an Eagle, trailing
only Reggie White (21.0 in 1987) and Clyde Simmons (19.0 in 1992). Only 16
players in NFL history have ever amassed more in a single season. This is
Babin’s second-straight selection after racking up 12.5 sacks as a member
of the Tennessee Titans in 2010. He is one of just three players (DeMarcus
Ware, Tamba Hali) to have at least 12 sacks in each of the last two years. His
30.5 quarterback takedowns during that span are second behind Ware’s
33.5. Prior to those last 31 games, Babin had registered just 17.5 sacks in 66
games. Originally a first-round draft choice of Houston in 2004, Babin spent
time with the Texans (2004-06), Seahawks (2007-08), and Chiefs (2008) before
joining the Eagles in 2009. He re-signed with the Eagles as a free agent prior
to the start of the 2011 season.

McCoy is enjoying one of the finest seasons in the
history of the franchise, setting team records and leading the league in
touchdowns (20) and rushing touchdowns (17), while becoming the first Eagle
ever to score in nine straight games. His 1,309 rushing yards rank second in
the NFL behind Maurice Jones-Drew (1,437), and he has amassed a league-leading
102 first downs and 48 rushes of 10-plus yards. He has surrendered just one
fumble all season, despite ranking fourth in the NFL in rushes (273), offensive
touches (321) and scrimmage yards (1,624). Originally a second-round draft
choice out of Pittsburgh in 2009, McCoy became the fifth player in Eagles
history to eclipse 1,000 rushing yards in back-to-back seasons, while setting
the team mark for most rushing (3,026) and scrimmage yards (4,241) in his first
three campaigns. His career 4.8-yards per carry also ranks as the highest
average ever by an Eagles running back.

Other Eagles running backs to earn Pro Bowl selections:
Brian Westbrook (2008, 2005), Ricky Watters (1997, 1996), Wilbert Montgomery
(1980, 1979), Tom Woodeshick (1969), Timmy Brown (1966, 1964, 1963), Ted Dean
(1962), Bill Barnes (1960, 1959, 1958).

Originally a rookie free agent signing in 2004 out of
Arkansas, Peters has emerged into one of the elite tackles in the
league, earning his fifth consecutive Pro Bowl nomination (tied with Browns T
Joe Thomas for longest streak among NFL tackles) and becoming the second tackle
in team history to make it to three straight (Frank Kilroy – 1953-55). He
ties Tra Thomas (2002-03, 2005), Bob Brown (1966-67, 1969) and Kilroy for the
most appearances ever by an Eagles tackle. In 2011, Peters has anchored an
offensive line that paved the way for the NFC’s leading rusher, while ranking
third in the NFL in total offense (399.7) and fifth in rushing yards per game
(146.7). The Eagles 30 sacks allowed this season are the team’s
third-fewest since sacks became an official stat in 1982. Peters, who was
acquired in a trade with the Buffalo Bills during the 2009 offseason, has
started in 40 games for the Eagles.

the team mark for most rushing (3,026) and scrimmage yards (4,241) in his first
three campaigns.

Coming out of a prolonged labor stoppage that forced the cancellation of all offseason activities, the Philadelphia Eagles nevertheless proceeded with their plan to rebuild the roster and forge ahead when the NFL Lockout finally ended in July.

During a hastily assembled training camp at Lehigh University, two particular catch-phrases quickly came to symbolize what the 2012 Eagles were supposed to be all about: “Dream Team” and “All In.”

What unfolded instead was a nightmare that left them all out of the playoffs for the first time since 2007.

The Eagles’ epic failure to live up to expectations is The Morning Call’s No. 3 regional sports story of the year.

After winning their opener with a blowout victory at St. Louis, the Eagles dropped their next four. Three of the losses came when the defense, under first-year coordinator Juan Castillo, failed to protect fourth-quarter leads.

Castillo and the defense would come under further fire after the Eagles failed in consecutive November games to protect fourth-quarter leads at home, against the Chicago Bears and Arizona Cardinals, to fall to 3-6.

The 21-17 loss to Arizona served as the flashpoint of the season, not only because the Eagles squandered another lead, but because wide receiver DeSean Jackson was held out of the game for disciplinary reasons while so many of their other key players were injured.

Quarterback Michael Vick missed the next three games, two of them losses, with cracked ribs. Cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie also sat out the next three with an ankle sprain. King Dunlap, a valuable reserve offensive lineman and special teams player, suffered a concussion and missed three games as well.

Those next three games all but mathematically knocked the Eagles out of playoff contention. Although they haven’t lost since, they were officially eliminated shortly after taking the field against the Dallas Cowboys last Saturday, when the New York Giants wrapped up a victory over the New York Jets.

For the Eagles (7-8), the first three-game winning streak of the season thus means very little because they took too long to put everything together.

Nine new starters, including six on defense, and 24 players overall who weren’t on the team last season are among the current 53-man roster. What’s more, the Eagles have new offensive and defensive line coaches, who have introduced radical alterations to the team’s previous methods.

Their offense and special teams have faltered to the tune of an NFL-high 36 turnovers and the league’s second-worst turnover margin (minus-12).

Quarterback Michael Vick, so brilliant in becoming the league’s comeback player of the year in 2010, has been a fragile interception machine who wasn’t available for, or has been unable to, finish four of the Eagles eight losses.

As a result, a potential record-breaking season by running back LeSean McCoy (1,309 rushing yards, 20 total TDs, 48 runs of 10 yards or more, franchise-best 4.8 yards per career rush) has turned bittersweet.

Dec 26, 2011 – Earlier today, Philadelphia Eagles running back LeSean McCoy talked about his ankle injury which he sustained against the Dallas Cowboys on Dec. 24. McCoy spoke as if his 2011 season is over.

Eagles head coach Andy Reid struck a different tone during a press conference today. He called a report that said McCoy won’t play “false” (via Eagles Twitter). Reid also said:

Reid: Shady has a “slight” ankle sprain but should be fine for Sunday <s>#</s>Eagles (via Jonathan Tamari’s Twitter)

McCoy is only 123 rushing yards away from the team record set by Wilbert Montgomery (1,512) in 1979.

Reid went further regarding his starters’ availability for the Eagles final game of the season against the Washington Redskins:

McCoy rushed for 35 yards on 13 carries against the Cowboys, hurting himself early in the fourth quarter. If McCoy cannot play Sunday against the Redskins, Ronnie Brown would likely receive the majority of carries.

The Eagles don’t have much reason to rush McCoy back from injury, since the team has been eliminated from the playoffs.
