Philadelphia Eagles Legend Brian Dawkins Announces…

One of the greatest players in Philadelphia Eagles history is set to retire. Former safety Brian Dawkins, one of the most popular athletes the city has ever seen, will hang it up after 16 NFL seasons. He spent the first 13 of those seasons with the Eagles. As a fan, I have fond memories of Dawkins and he will always remain one of my favorite players. The team has given Dawkins the opportunity to officially retire as a member of the Eagles. I hope he takes it but it doesn’t really matter. His legacy will always be secure in this town.

Dawkins had a dynamic career with the Eagles. He played in seven Pro Bowls with the team and blossomed into the best safety in the NFL. He was a part of five Philadelphia teams that reached the NFC Championship Game and he helped bridge the gap between the old guard and the Andy Reid era. His five All Pro selections with the Eagles are proof that he dominated the position. But the player was much more than that. He was a team leader and an icon in this town.

Dawkins represented the kind of player that Philadelphians love. He played with a gritty and tough style that we expect to see from all of our athletes. He also played the game clean and never got into trouble off the field. Dawkins had the charisma that a true leader needs. The Eagles never had a player like him before and haven’t had one since. That is the biggest reason why the fans loved him so much. When the Eagles parted ways with him after the 2008 season, the anger at the team was loud. You still hear people talk about how poor of a decision that was.

The Eagles are planning to retire the number 20 in Dawkins’ honor. In about five years he should get the call to join Canton. I can’t wait for that speech. I can’t wait for him to return to Philadelphia to be honored sometime soon. You might have a hard time finding a Philadelphia sports fan that doesn’t place Dawkins among their top five favorite athletes in city history. That really says a lot about him as a player and a person. I wish he could have continued to play here for a few more years but I will always appreciate the 13 years we had with him.

Denver Broncos' Brian Dawkins tweets he will…

Safety Brian Dawkins is retiring from the NFL after 16 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles and Denver Broncos, he announced Monday on Twitter.

ATL: Dawkins a rare breed

“The Lord has blessed me to play in the NFL for 16 years,” Dawkins said. “I would like to thank the Eagles & the Broncos 4 believing In me. I would like 2 thank all my teammates & Coaches that I have been blessed 2 go to battle with. Along with u, the fans 4 helping make my career 1 that i have enjoyed tremendously. In other words. I am announcing my retirement from the NFL.”

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported after Dawkins’ announcement that the Eagles are working to bring the safety back this week so he can retire as an Eagle. The newspaper also reported that Dawkins would be honored during an Eagles game this season.

Dawkins finishes his career with 26 sacks and 37 interceptions. He played in one Super Bowl with the Eagles and made nine Pro Bowls (including this past season, as an alternate). Dawkins also was a four-time first-team All-Pro selection.

“Thank you, @BrianDawkins, for being a GREAT Bronco and showing such an incredible commitment to your team and community,” Broncos executive vice president of football operations John Elway wrote on Twitter, adding: “Congratulations on a Hall of Fame career, Dawk!!!”

Photo gallery: Brian Dawkins through the years

Dawkins battled neck injuries toward the end of the 2012 season and missed two of the Broncos’ final three games of the regular season and the team’s two playoff games.

“Brian Dawkins is one of the best to ever play the game, a future Hall of Famer who changed the way his position is played,” Broncos coach John Fox said in a statement released by the team. “In many ways, he helped my job as a coach with his great leadership and preparation. He brought so much to the table and was such an enormous asset to our football team.

“His contributions go far beyond the wins, interceptions, sacks and Pro Bowls he accumulated during his career. Brian is the definition of class and is what you want in a leader. I know our players, coaches, fans and so many within the National Football League feel the same way.”

Dawkins’ contract with the Broncos expired after the season, and The Denver Post reported he spent close to six weeks mulling over his options.

“I’m a little emotional right now,” Dawkins told The Post shortly after announcing his retirement, adding that he needs some time before he can talk.

Eagles Hint at Changing Thought Process for Draft:…

Are the Philadelphia Eagles really thinking about changing the way they evaluate players in the NFL Draft? According to general manager Howie Roseman, that is a definite possibility. After seemingly acknowledging that mistakes have been made in past drafts, Roseman spoke about how the team is reconsidering the way it thinks. This includes how the team evaluates character as well as the way it uses the combine to assess picks. As an Eagles fan, a change in mentality could be just what the Eagles need.

The Eagles would be wise to think about how they measure character. The biggest reason for this is that character is too difficult to measure. Just because a player has had an issue in college doesn’t mean that it will carry over to the NFL. College players are going to make mistakes off the field from time to time. Not every mistake means that they will become a bad guy. The Eagles have passed on plenty of great players in the past for what they perceived as character issues. For the most part, those players have had solid NFL careers that were mostly free of issues. In recent years, the Eagles have loosened up their character evaluation when it comes to free agency. It makes even more sense to do so when it comes to the draft.

When it comes to the combine, there isn’t an Eagles fan out there that wouldn’t mind some changes to the way the team uses it. We all remember Mike Mamula. He catapulted up the draft board for the Eagles based entirely on his effort at the scouting combine. Mamula was an okay player but he never lived up to the hype. The combine might have some value but I would rather see the Eagles look at the college career of a player more than things like that.

For years, the Eagles have said they will always take the best available player. That has done them wonders in the later rounds but has mostly been a letdown in the first round. They will still take the best available player but maybe they will use a different thought process in order to determine that. We should get a pretty good idea if the mentality really changed as soon as the Eagles make their first selection Thursday, April 26. I hope those changes are more than just talk.

Eagles Should Stay Put in NFL Draft: A Fan's…

With the NFL Draft set to begin on April 26, talk about the Philadelphia Eagles moving from the number 15 pick is all over the place. Various sources have hinted that they might move all the way up to number four. Others are suggesting that they might trade down and stockpile more picks. As a fan, I think the Eagles are better off staying right where they are. There is little to gain and a lot to risk by moving from their current position. Here a few reasons why the Eagles should stay put in the NFL Draft.

There is a lot of defensive talent

This draft is heavy on defensive players, particularly on the line. Most expect the Eagles to select a defensive player with their first pick and that is the right choice. Fortunately for them they don’t have to trade up in order to get a quality player. Defensive linemen like Quinton Coples and Jerel Worthy should be there at number 15. On the same note, those players might not be there at the end of the first round. The Eagles would be better off taking the best available defensive player at number 15 than they would be trading down for a lesser player.

They have plenty of draft picks

Why do the Eagles need to stockpile more picks? The Eagles already have two second round picks and three sixth round picks. I would much rather see the team use those picks and limit the amount of rookies they have to develop in 2012. The extra pick in the second round should guarantee the team three players that can be regular contributors in 2012. That should be sufficient given what the team already has.

The team is close

The Eagles have made some great moves in the offseason and should be a contending team in 2012. Picking the right guy at number 15 could be the move that puts them over the edge. If the Eagles do trade down, they are running the risk of losing out a player that can make a big difference. If they trade up, they will likely have to give up one of those second round picks and have the same issue. There is no reason they shouldn’t get a quality player at number 15.

Philadelphia Eagles Schedule to Be Released on…

Philadelphia Eagles fans will finally get to see what the schedule looks like for the 2012 season. The NFL will reveal the regular season schedule on Tuesday, April 17 at 7:00 p.m. EST. This is always an exciting day for NFL fans because it makes the new season feel a little closer. While we know the opponents for the Eagles, we don’t know when those games will take place. Here are some questions about the 2012 schedule that I can’t wait to have answered.

Who will be the first opponent?

The season opener is always a huge event. I can’t wait to see who the opponent will be in the first week of the season. Since 2007, the Eagles have opened the season against the St. Louis Rams and Green Bay Packers twice each. That won’t happen since neither team will face the Eagles this season. Since we know the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants are playing each other in Week 1, there is little chance that the team will face a division opponent in the season opener. They opened the 2009 season against the Carolina Panthers and could do the same in 2012. That would create a pretty bizarre pattern for season openers.

When will the division games take place?

I am really hoping to see the Eagles visit the Cowboys on Thanksgiving. Beyond that, all we know is that they will face a division opponent in Week 17. It’s anyone’s guess as to where the other games will fall. I want to see who the first division opponents is and I want to see which teams they play on the road before playing at home. I would love to see the Cowboys or Giants visit Lincoln Financial Field in December.

When will the bye week take place?

I am a big fan of having the bye week fall between Week 7 and Week 9. Of course, that might not happen this season. The bye week can play a major role in the fortunes of a team. I hope that it comes at a time that allows the Eagles to be strategic about it. Of course, I also want to see who the Eagles play immediately following the bye week. Andy Reid has never lost a game following a bye. Will the NFL schedulers try and test that by giving them one of their tougher games? I wouldn’t be surprised to see that.

What are the prime time games?

We can assume that at least one game against the Giants or Cowboys will appear in prime time. Despite an 8-8 finish, the Eagles are probably going to get at least three prime time slots for the season. Two of those would probably be divisional games. The Eagles also face playoff teams in the Pittsburgh Steelers, Baltimore Ravens, New Orleans Saints, Cincinnati Bengals, Detroit Lions, and Atlanta Falcons. I can see the Ravens, Steelers, or Saints appearing as prime time opponents for the Eagles.

Eagles' Reid: No power struggle exists; I…

Any doubts about Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid’s commitment to the team after reportedly threatening to resign can be put to rest.

Speaking from the NFL Annual Meeting on Wednesday in Palm Beach, Fla., Reid denied he ever was close to walking away because of a power struggle over personnel.

Harrison: Free-agency winners/losers

“I’ve got the final say, but I will tell you: We work as a team,” said Reid, the NFL’s longest-tenured coach who will enter his 14th season in Philadelphia. “We’ve always done that. One of our strengths is that we do that. We check our egos at the door, and we work together, and we listen to each other.

“We have great respect for each other. We come out with that final move, and I kind of put the stamp on it. The people I work with are phenomenal. That’s the way it’s been and will continue to be.”

This offseason, the Eagles have re-signed wide receiver DeSean Jackson and defensive end Trent Cole to new deals, in addition to retaining guards Evan Mathis and Todd Herremans. Philadelphia also upgraded at linebacker by trading for linebacker DeMeco Ryans from the Houston Texans.

Reid said the team has no interest in free-agent receiver Plaxico Burress, who has gone public with his desire to play with Eagles quarterback Michael Vick.

“They’re buddies. They grew up together, and I know they’re friends,” Reid said. “I’ve got a ton of respect for Plax. He’s had a great career. Right now that’s not where we’re at. But that doesn’t take anything away from his game. He can play.”

Plaxico Burress Rumors Have Grown Quiet in…

The Philadelphia Eagles have addressed a lot of areas during the offseason. Of course, there are still several needs. A lot of those will be taken care of in the draft but there are still some other things that the team can do in free agency. One interesting area is wide receiver. With DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin, and Jason Avant on the team the Eagles are pretty secure at the position. But there is still room to add another target for Michael Vick. One name we heard a lot about is Plaxico Burress. The buzz about the free agent has died down, but does that mean that the Eagles have given up on him? Personally, I am still not a fan of the team signing Burress.

I like the idea of adding a big receiver that Vick can use in the end zone. However, I think Burress has too much baggage. Even if he behaves himself, he will still be a distraction. That is something this team doesn’t need. There is no reason to add another ego to the locker room. As with any free agent, the Eagles need to weigh the risks of signing Burress against the reward. Is there really so much he can do to make the headache worthwhile? He didn’t show me a lot during his season with the New York Jets. I don’t think it is worth it to bring him here.

There are other available free agents that could give the Eagles a tall receiving threat. Names like Michael Clayton and Bryant Johnson would give the Eagles a decent receiver with good size. They aren’t as tall as Burress but they are tall enough to make an impact. Best of all, they would be content with a role as the third or fourth receiver. These are players that wouldn’t cause a distraction. As we all learned in 2011, this team doesn’t need any more distractions.

The Eagles haven’t mentioned anything about Burress. I’ll take that as a sign that they simply aren’t that interested in him. Burress is just another big name that grabs headlines. He isn’t a guy that will take this team to the next level. The Eagles would be wise to ignore the rumors and let Burress land with another team. There are better options out there.

Eagles Have Been Winners in Free Agency: A…

Now that NFL free agency is nearly two weeks old, it is a good time to measure how a team is doing. Is it possible for a team to be given a top grade even though they haven’t really signed any free agents from another team? The Philadelphia Eagles are proving that you can do just. As an Eagles fan, I would say that the team has been successful so far even though they haven’t inked a deal with a free agent that wasn’t already an Eagles player. Here are a few reasons why the team has been successful.

They fixed the biggest needs

Heading into the offseason, the Eagles had several needs that they had to address. The biggest ones involved the linebacker position and the future of wide receiver DeSean Jackson. The Eagles solved both. They re-signed Jackson to a long term deal and avoided something that could have been a distraction all season. Then, the team traded for middle linebacker DeMeco Ryans. This was a deal that came out of nowhere. The trade for Ryans was better than any free agent or draft pick the Eagles could have gotten. Any time a team takes care of their own needs, they deserve some credit. The biggest need now might be at backup quarterback. The Eagles signed Trent Edwards before free agency began but I am not convinced he is a suitable backup just yet. Still, he is an upgrade from Vince Young.

They secured their own players

In addition to re-signing Jackson, several other key players were given long term deals. Trent Cole, Todd Herremans, and Evan Mathis all signed extensions with the team. These moves help secure both lines as the Eagles try to win that elusive Super Bowl. All three players have several good years left and the Eagles were wise to keep them in the fold for the long haul. Again, taking care of your own is a good way to avoid issues down the line.

They have flexibility in the draft

By solving the major issues, the Eagles have more room to do different things in the draft. The overwhelming need to draft a linebacker in the first round is no longer there. Instead, the Eagles can focus on other defensive areas and get guys that can help them for years to come. They could also swing a trade or two and put themselves in a better position. The point is that the team has options. At the end of the season, everyone assumed that the Eagles would select a linebacker first. Now they can address needs on the defensive line and in the secondary.

Eagles agree to terms with DE Cole on four-year…

The Philadelphia Eagles have agreed to terms with Trent Cole on a contract extension that will keep the defensive end in Philadelphia through the 2017 season, the team announced Wednesday.

Cole has had at least nine sacks in each of the past five years, and had 11 sacks along with 45 tackles in 14 games this past season. Coles has 68 sacks and has forced 12 fumbles in his seven years with the Eagles.

“Trent plays the game with a level of tenacity that’s hard to replicate,” Eagles coach Andy Reid said in a statement released by the team. “He’s one of the premier DEs in the league.”

“We have always said that when you watch the tape, it’s hard to tell the difference between his first play and his last play,” Reid continued. “And as good as he is rushing the passer, he is equally as good against the run. His energy is contagious on the field.”

Cole is set to address the media Wednesday at noon ET.

Key Deadlines Approach Fast For Eagles

When will the Philadelphia Eagles have to sign DeSean Jackson? When will the team sign their next big free agent? There are two dates you need to know, to find out.

While the Eagles have been quite in the offseason, all that is about to change in the next three weeks.

On next Monday, March 5th at 4 p.m., the Eagles must decide if the franchise tag will be used on DeSean Jackson.

The Eagles face three choices – sign Jackson to a long-term deal by March 5th, use the tag or let Jackson become a free agent.

There are at least eight quality receivers who could be free agents, but there could be fewer if some get the franchise tag.

The belief in Philadelphia is that Jackson should get the franchise tag, costing the Eagles about $9.5 million for a one-year contract.

That deal would likely end the Eagles’ career of Asante Samuel, who will be traded to give Philadelphia salary-cap space to sign other players in the free agency period.

The open free agency period starts on Tuesday, March 13th at 4 p.m.

If the Eagles don’t keep DeSean Jackson, big-time free agents like Dwayne Bowe, Vincent Jackson, Marques Colston, Steve Johnson and Mario Manningham could be available.

The Eagles could also sign a linebacker like Stephen Tulloch, Curtis Lofton, Dan Connor or David Hawthorne to sure up the middle linebacking position before the draft.

The NFL draft isn’t until April 26.

For now, the Eagles have the 15th pick in round one and two picks in round two (the 14th and the 19th) and one pick in round three (the 13th pick).

According to the convention draft-pick value chart, the Eagles could trade up as high as the number 4th pick in the first round, if Philadelphia traded its first three picks.

That would not be high enough to get Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III.

But a trade involving the Eagles’ first round pick and the second-round pick from the Cardinals (from the Kevin Kolb trade) would put the Eagles in the 7th position in the first round. A similar deal with the Eagles other second-round pick would put them in the 8th position.

Jacksonville and Miami currently have the 7th and 8th picks in round one, and they play in the AFC, so either team could be a trading partner with the Eagles.

The Jaguars need a receiver or a defensive end in the draft, while the Dolphins needs are at quarterback, offensive line and defensive end.

But the Eagles may not need a higher-priced player available with the 7th or 8th pick.

Instead, Philadelphia could trade both second-round picks for the 21st pick in the first round, which now belongs to the Cincinnati Bengals.

That’s all the news for today.

Philadelphia Eagles’ 2011 Fantasy Football…

As soon as Vince Young said the term, “dream team,” fans of the Philadelphia Eagles must have been scared. While the team was the most active during the offseason in bringing in stars, comments from the least talented of the new acquisitions were sure to cause problems. The Eagles struggled to an 8-8 record and while some players had monstrous fantasy seasons, others faltered. Who are the biggest surprise and disappointments, and which star can say they were the Eagles’ 2011 fantasy MVP?

MVP – LeSean McCoy

There is no doubt in my mind that McCoy is the best running back in the NFL, especially so in fantasy football. This season, his yardage figures don’t compare to those of Ray Rice, but the instability at the quarterback position in Philadelphia can be blamed for that. He rushed for 1,309 yards on 273 carries and made 48 catches for 315 yards with 20 total touchdowns.

Biggest Surprise – Jason Babin

The eight-year pro is one of the offseason acquisitions for the Eagles, but he was probably the least hyped. When the Eagles signed him, it was his sixth team in six seasons, including a previous stint with the team. As a member of the Tennessee Titans a year ago, he made 13 sacks and was a force on the defensive line. What he did this season was grow from that success to become one of the best sack-artists in the NFL. He made 18 sacks to go with 40 total tackles, rewarding those fantasy GMs that selected him in IDP leagues.

Biggest Disappointment – Michael Vick

The former Atlanta Falcons’ quarterback began his second season as the Philadelphia starter and suffered through the same problems he has suffered from his entire career. He missed three games due to injury, adding further proof that his body type isn’t one for taking hits. He did set a new career high in passing yards with 3,303, but struggled in all other facets. A year ago, he turned the ball over nine total times, while this season, he threw 14 interceptions and lost four fumbles. It is hard to keep your team in the game when you keep giving the ball away.

Another disappointing stat for Vick were his rushing scores. A year ago, he set a career-high with nine and followed that up this season with just one. Vick can still be a fantasy star, but he won’t be a first round selection in 2012 like he was this season.

Philadelphia Eagles face an uncertain offseason…

The Eagles struggled early and never recovered. A four-game winning streak at the end came too late and they finished 8-8, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2007 and just the fourth time in coach Andy Reid’s 13 seasons.

“It’s going to motivate us to work harder,” quarterback Michael Vick said Monday. “It’s very disappointing.”

After an offseason spending spree brought several accomplished players to Philadelphia and added to a roster that already featured Vick, LeSean McCoy and DeSean Jackson, the Eagles were the talk of the NFL. They were defending NFC East champions and seemingly on the rise.

So when Young compared his new teammates to the Miami Heat, some people scoffed but most expected the Eagles to make a serious run at the first championship since 1960. Even team president Joe Banner declared the Eagles “all-in” and called this a Super Bowl-or-bust year.

But the team quickly imploded.

“There were definitely red flags,” said defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins, who won the Super Bowl with Green Bay last season. “A lot of people see Super Bowl, or I think they let the fact that the Super Bowl is there, and so many people talk about it right away. You can hear people nowadays, they come out of the draft talking about Super Bowl and I think it kind of gets thrown around too loosely now.

“It’s obviously the ultimate goal in where you want to get to, but you have to understand that you have to work hard. It’s something that is a process and you have to take it each step at a time to get to it and I think a lot of time people just want to jump from preseason to the Super Bowl without doing what it takes in between.”

Various factors contributed to a four-game losing streak that dropped the Eagles to 1-4 and doomed them from the beginning. Vick couldn’t finish two games in September because of injuries, the offense made critical turnovers and the defense struggled mightily as new players tried to adjust to new defensive coordinator Juan Castillo’s system.

Finishing games was a problem, too. The Eagles lost five games in which they led in the fourth quarter. One play could’ve made the difference in a season where the division was mediocre. The Eagles weren’t eliminated from playoff contention until right before their next-to-last game kicked off and they ended up second behind the New York Giants (9-7).

“It will be tough to sit at home and watch the playoffs, but we have to maintain a positive outlook about what we could be and go into the offseason knowing that we can play with the best teams in the league,” wide receiver Jeremy Maclin said. “Philly is not used to not being in the playoffs. I think guys will be hungry. This offseason will be very critical for us and I think it will be good.”

It’s uncertain whether the team will make major changes. Reid was criticized heavily this season and many fans want him gone. They chanted “Fire Andy!” during a loss to New England. Reid refused to discuss his future after Sunday’s game and wasn’t available to reporters on Monday. He’s expected to return, but his coaching staff may look different.
