| Former Eagles defensive end, Willey, 83, dies |
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Norm Willey, a former Pro Bowl defensive end with the Philadelphia Eagles, died on Thursday night in Newark, Del. He was 83. Nicknamed “Wild Man,” Willey played in 92 games for the Eagles from 1950-1957 and earned All-Pro selections three times (1953, ’54, ’55). He was named to the Pro Bowl, as well, in 1955 and 1956. After his playing days concluded, Willey remained in the area, and became a teacher and driver’s education instructor for 30 years at Pennsville (N.J.) High. He was also an assistant football coach there. Willey was selected by Philadelphia in the 13th round of the 1950 draft out of Marshall. His career ended in 1957. A two-sport star with the Thundering Herd, Willey was inducted into the West Virginia school’s Hall of Fame for his achievements in football and basketball. Willey will be remembered in football circles for an incredible game he had on Oct. 26, 1952. According to accounts, in a game vs. the New York Giants, he posted 17 tackles of quarterback Charley Conerly behind the line of scrimmage. But sacks were not recorded as official statistics back then, so he is not known as the single-game sack leader in NFL history. That title belongs to former Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Derrick Thomas, who posted seven on Nov. 11, 1990, vs. the Seattle Seahawks. Leave any suggestions in the comment box. | Noel Devine cut from Philadelphia Eagles |
|
| Noel Devine Signs With Philadelphia Eagles,… | Read More: Philadelphia Eagles Former West Virginia University running back Noel Devine has signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent, according to a report on Tuesday evening. Devine posted huge numbers in his first three years with the Moutaineers, averaging over six yards per carry in each and racking up 1,289 yards rushing as a sophomore and 1,465 as a junior. He struggled a bit as a senior, however, and was slowed by a toe injury, posting just 936 yards for the year. He’s had a tough life – his parents both died of AIDS, and various adults (including, briefly, Deion Sanders, who went to the same high school as Devine) watched over him after that. As a teenager, he saw a friend of his be shot and killed. Despite the struggles, Devine found success on the field and in college at West Virginia. He’s very small, listed at 5-foot-8, 180 pounds (and he might be even smaller than that). But he has excellent speed, and he might be capable of helping the Eagles on returns and on third downs. At his size, he isn’t likely to be a featured back, but it’s not often that one expects to find that sort of player as an undrafted free agent anyway. At the time of the NFL Draft, Devine looked likely to be a late-round pick, so the Eagles have done well to grab him as a free agent. For more on the Eagles, check out Bleeding Green Nation. That’s all the news for today. Posted in eagles-news | Comments Off
